My great grandfather, Robert Canning and
his wife Jane Phillips Canning migrated to Allegheny City (part of Pittsburgh) Pennsylvania in the 1860s. He was the son of the Clerk of the Kilgronighan(sp.) parish in Tobermore. I have a bible given to Robert ( either my gr grandfather orhis son Robert C. Canning) by one Mathilda Canning in 1861. It was from the inscription Tubbermore/Kilchro...) parish that I connect with their Tubbermore/Tobermore roots. Family stories indicate that his family were Church of Ireland prople and Jane's were Baptist. The marriage was not approved by Robert's family so they skipped town and landed in Allegheny City. Here they joined the Disciples of Christ(Campbellite) congregation that was sort of an American hybrid of Presbyterian and Baptist traditions
