World War Two / Re: Grandfathers Naval Service Details And Medals
« on: Saturday 23 May 15 22:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi to you both.

I obtained my fathers navy record some 10 years ago and its just a two page summary - list of ships and dates and not much else. No medal information at all. I have obtained a couple of army records and they run to many pages with lots of information. Was I just given a summary sheet and there is a bigger one?

I went to the National Archives and looked at the ships logs - this show where they were at the times he was on board, but not much else. It takes some planning to identify the records but I found it very useful to see where he travelled to

Zetlander

If you can trace the man's death details you should be able to get a copy death certificate from the Government Records Office. You may still need to prove kinship to get the Navy record.

As mentioned elsewhere you would get two pages of A4, the main list will show shore depots and ships he served on and dates of transfer. It should also show any qualifications. You should be able to find some information on the ships online but you see the ships logs you will need to visit the National Records Archive where they are held. they will tell you ship locations but not much else.

Hope this helps

World War One / Re: Reasons for receiving Military Medal

Dear all, good luck with your searches. My maternal grandfather Joseph Moses, East Yorks regt was awarded the MM. I started with his medal card, then London Gazette, then local papers and found no explanation.
Took a trip to Kew last year spent two days looking through the war diaries and my Dad's naval records for WW2. The war diaries are hard work, but worth it for understanding something of what they went through. Only mention I found was that he had been awarded the MM but no comment as to why.

Wendy,
Just seen your post. If its not too late - hope you find what you are looking for at the National Archives. I spent two days there last year trawling through WW1 war diaries - its both hard work and quite heart rending. Suggest you make sure you have plenty of material you want to look at as it is impossible to predict what you will find.

Louisa,
I spotted William was a train driver.
You seem to have the same problems we all face from time to time. Are you able to look at the actual census record or just the transcription? Either way a bit of digging is required - often the spelling is wrong or transcibed wrongly. Don't forget not all births were registered.
Good luck

Louisa - good luck with it, but just to add to the confusion:

I have a William Collingwood born Stanhope 1841. His parents were Joseph & Margaret (nee Wallis). In 1851 census he was a lead ore washer. Unfortunately for you he was married to Isabella Hanson in 1861. He had 7 children.

A quick look on the 1881 census on Ancestry has a William Collingwood born Shildon 1840 (just south of Bishops Auckland) married to a Charlotte from Guisborough - and living there. This may be the one for you.

Hope it helps.

World War Two / Re: RASC - Capel, Lewis, Yugor? and Stone

Thanks for the suggestion ScouseBoy - he was married in 1929. My mother in law cannot recall when he returned home - I keep trying clues that may jog her memory - problem is not much was talked about it when he was alive.

Dear all,
Many thanks for your comments - too fast for me to keep up with them.
I know he was a driver but have not yet got his service record - requested it a few months back but they wrote saying it could be a while. Later he was in Iceland then back into Europe after D day.

I know his birth & marriage dates - how do they help?

Cheers

James

World War Two / RASC - Capel, Lewis, Yugor? and Stone
« on: Monday 22 November 10 08:25 GMT (UK)  »
The attached photo is of my mother in laws father Sidney Capel and three friends. It is believed to have been taken in 1939 - 40. Can anyone confirm the uniforms are the RASC or comment on the badges? He was apparently in France in May 1940 and his unit returned to England after Dunkirk, but we have not got to the bottom of that yet.

Names and addresses of the others are written on the back of the photo - hope they may be of interest to someone - G W Stone, Brighton (sitting RH side), G G Lewis, Swansea (sitting LH side) and John Yugor (difficult to read), Jesmond, Newcastle (standing RH side). Welcome any comments or queries.
