New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Wahlers....obituary help
« on: Monday 15 October 12 09:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi Janette KHP & Minniehaha

thanks for the many replies......I have some of the info but as always there are new details for which I am grateful.  This does clarify the question of children.

info re probate details access is interesting and I will find out more about the costs involved first....I have looked at "paperspast" before and find this very helpful.....

I do have details of the marriage of Harold Gordon in England and also a copy of the Will for him....it appears there was little or no contact with siblings after her left NZ......I still have little to go on about the possible Kipplinger connection in WW2 though for him....I imagine there should be some detail war info out there somewhere...

KHP ......what is A$Y? I cannot find any reference......

Thanks again

Alan

Hi Janette

Thanks for the two replies.......seems to confirm my info........means both obituary reports apparently incorrect though......

Interested to find the probate details being at Wellington Archives....looked these up but only available by personal visit it seems.....a reason to visit NZ again!.......unfortunately the rise in the value of the NZ dollar makes this unlikely in the near future I am sad to say......

As an aside I understand that Harold Gordon Wahlers was batman to General Kippenberger during the WW2.........I have tried to verify this but not found detail info that does so.....he returned to the UK in 1946 after the War ended.......still searching though.....

Best wishes

Alan

New Zealand Completed Requests / Wahlers....obituary help
« on: Saturday 13 October 12 11:51 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if someone can help clarify two differing obituary reports following the death of Charles Ernest Wahlers on 16.9.1920? He was born 20.3.1872 in Liverpool England.

one paper records "leaves a widow, son and 2 daughters"........another "leaves a widow, two sons and 3 daughters"...

my research shows children as ....Charles James Eric, born 4.1.1897, Herbert Ernest born 15.1.1898, Florence Dorothy May, born 1905 and possibly Harold Gordon, born 1907.

Thanks for any help.

Recently attended the AGFHS 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Adelphi in Liverpool.

Met a lady who now holds the records for the german church in Liverpool.......her name is Ilona Ziessler and her contact email is (*)
I realise that you may have sorted this now as it started some years ago but the contact info may help others.......

Europe / Re: German Pork Butchers in Britain

Hi limehouse79

interesting to hear of your Liverpool and, more so, your Athol Street connection....my gggf was a german pork butcher at 273 Athol Street around the 1880's.....he was born in Gross Sottrum (nw germany) but married a fellow german in 1862 in Liverpool....also other addresses around Athol Street.

I have found no photos yet of this street, other than the Police Station near the top, but wonder what it was like......300+ houses and 30+ pubs.  I did think it would be interesting to try to figure out the puzzle by joining numbers and names from the old ordnance survey map and the census returns.

I will check out my info to see if I can find any links with your names.

Hi All

just come across this topic.....it is excellent and a quick search has prompted me to add the WAHLERS name to the subject....my gggf Hermann  Wahlers (born 1838 in Gross Sottrum, died 1915) married Anna Sophia Koch (born in Germany c 1836) in 1862 at St Nicholas Church in Liverpool.  They had 8 children.

Hermann Wahlers was a german pork butcher at 273 Athol Street for many years but had retired by 1898.  He supported the german church in Liverpool and, in his wisdom, was a subscriber to Everton Football Club.

I have never come across an old photograph of Athol Street....but it was a long street in the docklands area with over 300 houses and over 30 public houses!

There is a connection with the WAHLERS family name and sugarbakers, the White Star Line, lace export, Australia and New Zealand.

Hello

I have looked in the past (mid 1990s) for records from the german church and was helped locally with transcripts of marriages etc.  However I think later the records for Liverpool were transferred to the german church in Manchester...so it might be worth trying this. Unfortunately I have no contact info....

I understood that after the church in Renshaw Street was demolished the area was redeveloped.  I always wonder what happened to any burials....assuming there were burials.

I did also receive copies of cuttings from the paper about the german church from  Liverpool Library.

Regards.

« on: Tuesday 10 November 09 00:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello.....might be a little late but just read your message.....have spoken with a friend of mine....looks like on OS plan around 1890s...Musters Arms was indicated in Annesley on opposite side of road to a church...around about OS 500 535.....no sign there now of the building indicated on PTP photograph....

you will notice that this is at end of a public footpath, about a miles walk from Annesley Hall...

....hope that this helps

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: WAHLERS Lookup please

Hi Bren , Stephanie, Mk2_Zephyr and Bee29

As a follow up I can now report receipt of marriage certificate for CHARLES ERNEST WAHLERS which now proves link back to Lancashire area of England.  I must follow up in the UK or Germany for further search for ancestors before 1840.

There is still more to learn about the NZ/Australia connection of the WAHLERS family, but I appreciate all your help.  If I can assist you in return in any way from the UK I will be happy to.  Also if you bump into the WAHLERS name at any time......

Having spent two fabulous holidays in NZ in recent years my wife and I have appreciated the warmth and welcome of the people of NZ.  I am sure we will be back soon and we envy you in your fantastic country.

Regards

Alan
