Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Adoption of William Ryan (b.1893 Bradford, England)

Hello again John (Softly Softly). Since we last spoke I found the 1st marriage to Ann Rossiter m.12/1/1857 @ St.Patrick's chapel, Collyhurst, Manchester. Ann died 2/6/1890 in Manchester, the year before he married Mary Davis in Bradford. Patrick's parents were William Ryan & Margaret Murphy m.22/1/1832 @ New Inn & Knockgraffon Tipperary.

All indications suggest that William Ryan and Margaret Murphy were my gt-gt-grandparents who married 22/1/1832 at New Inn/Knockgraffon. They were living at Marlhill at the time. They came to England around 1847 with their family, including my gt-grandfather Patrick. From there onwards I have their progress from Manchester to Bradford recorded in the census's. Patrick disappeared around 1895, his 2nd wife went back to Kendal and Grandad was left in an orphanage. I have 2 brick walls, 1/ Where was William from and who were his parents .  2/what happened to Patrick ?  P.s. I've researched all the obvious avenues and many not so obvious and I have spent a week in the Tipperary area this year so if anyone has any specific info or new leads, I would be grateful of the help. Thank you Alan Ryan. P.s. I have posted before on this subject but I have developed a bad memory with age, so apologies if I've repeated myself in any way.

I finally visited Tipperary 2 months ago. Marlhill is just an area with a few scattered cottages. I took numerous grave photo's at Roscrea, Borrisoleigh, New Inn and others but no apparent connections, disappointing but a great holiday and I got to stay in Dublin with a FH discovered 3rd cousin for 2 nights

Good morning Heywood, thank you for your reply and information. I have James and Ellen but not Nicholas, I'll have another look at Parish register. I also have Charlotte c.1849 - c.1891 from the Manchester census. I've been searching for the family's home township for over 20 years and researched numerous what eventually turned out to be red herrings, many of which I've posted on here. I'll now start searching Marlhill to see if I have any luck there. Hopefully I can get across to Ireland again in the near future and visit these towns grave yards. Alan

Tipperary / Ryan family

I recently found entries in the "New Inn & Knockgraffon" parish register listing William Ryan (gtgt-grandfather) marriage to Margaret Murphy on 22/1/1832 and Patrick Ryan gt-grandfather bapt.5/8/1835. Finding it impossible to trace family further back or forward up to 1857 when Patrick  married Ann Rossiter in Manchester, England. Any help would be appreciated. Alan Ryan

Yes, very elusive, I've tried looking from every angle I can think of, including following the marriage witnesses to Glasgow, Scotland where I actually found a Patrick Ryan and family living close by. Another dead end  :-\

There was several Patrick Ryan's living in the same area, hence the different birth dates. There was a Patrick death in 1916 at 79 Captain street which I spent many weeks researching via the witness (married daughter) but even that proved wrong when Patrick married again and gave his fathers name as Thomas (not William). I've also found that tailoring was quite a common occupation for our family, even as far away as New York where I have found DNA matches.

Alan, Patrick I believe died 1896. He asper his marriage to Mary was a widower with quiet a few children from his first marriage

Thank you John, I don't have anything on Patrick apart from 1891 to c.1994, I've been searching for decades and followed many leads to no avail. If you have something that I haven't found and could look into, I would be very grateful. Alan

Williams birth parents were Patrick Ryan b.1847 and Mary Davis b.1869 m.26/12/1891. They parted c.1895. Patrick disappeared and Mary went back to her home town and re-married as a spinster.
