First, thank you Nanny Jan for the information on the Dorset FHS! I plan to send the list to them for look up.  :)

Second, thank you Alli for the information you provided!  Does this mean that I could find their graves in the St John the Baptist graveyard? I did a search on the web and found that the present church was built in 1905. Do you know if it was built on same site???

With best regards,
Cecilia

Hi,

I'm planning a visit to Dorset this summer & would like to locate & visit the graves of my ancestors.  I've listed the year they died & where they were buried.

Robert Roper
1823   Broadwindsor
Grace Roper (Stoodley)
1847   Broadwindsor
Eve Stoodley (Davey)
1795   Broadwindsor
Thomas Stoodley
1741   Stoke Abbott
Thomas Stoodley
1721   Stoke Abbott
Giles Stoodley
1666   Broadwindsor
Christian Stoodley (Hellier)
1703    Broadwindsor
Giles Stoodley
1637   Broadwindsor
John (Tristram) Stoodley
1610   Broadwindsor
John Stoodley
1558    Broadwindsor
Agnes Stoodley

Any assistance or advice on how to proceed would be most appreciated!

Thanks,
Cecilia

lissa,

Thank you for the time you have spent trying to help me :)

As you can probably tell, I am new to this research & learning the hard way as usual. Early on, I would spend hours searching through different on-line lists & not keeping track of the results. I found a Joseph on an immigration list that seemed to be a possibility. The spelling was way off but I remember he had an occupation of hurdle maker. This was before I found out for certain that this was indeed my great, grandfather's occupation so I didn't bookmark the find & now I can't find it again :'(  I know I  have checked the ancestry.com immigration sources. Beyond that, I'm not exactly sure what I've checked or not checked at this point. I'm not familiar w/ all of the sources you mentioned? Is there one site that has links to all of them? As you mentioned, all of the different spellings of Studley / Stoodley is adding a level of difficulty to the search.

Any advice you have on how to proceed would be much appreciated!

Yes, these are my ancestors.

I am trying to find the actual emigration record for Joseph.

Thanks!

I'm looking for an emigration record for Joseph Stoodley / Studley from England to US in 1869 / 1870. He was born in 1836 & his occupation was a hurdle maker.  I remember coming across something awhile back, but I can't find it again ???

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kris,

Thank you so much for your help sorting this out.

It's very confusing to me.

I came across this link that may help to explain some of the mystery based on what you're finding ...

http://www.faulkner-history.fsnet.co.uk/Stoodley_frame.htm

There is an Abraham, bastard son of Grace Stoodley & Robert Roper.

I couldn't determine if this Abraham was my great grandfather Abraham , but based on what you're find it looks like he could be.

What do you think?

Ian,

Thank you for your response ...

My only sources of information about Joseph are his death certificate which lists his birthplace as Somerset, England and the attached biographical sketch from the  Missouri Historical Society library at UM-Columbia. It lists his birthplace as somewhere near Chard, England.

 http://thelibrary.springfield.missouri.org/lochist/history/paspres/studleyj.html

His death certificate lists his father as Abraham Studley & his birthplace as also being Somerset, England. Based on this information, I'm not sure that the Joseph you have listed is the same one even though the dates match up.

I have requested copies of the birth certificate of his son, David G Stoodley, my grandfather and his marriage certificate from the GRO. I'm hoping that these documents will provide some more details on Joseph.

Best regards,
Cecilia

Trying to do some family research from across the pond ...

Looking for information on Joseph Studley (or Stoodley) or his father Abraham. Joseph was born on Dec 22, 1836 in Somerset. His wife was Ann Vincent, daughter of Robert Vincent. They were married in 1859 & emigrated to the US in 1870. He was a hurdle maker.

Thanks!
