Berkshire / Havell Family, Moulsford/Reading
« on: Saturday 26 April 25 13:06 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I’m looking for any information, family connections or help with the Havell family of Moulsford/Reading please.

Many of the family from the late 1700s onward were significant artists and engravers.

However, I’m interested in the apparent Norman origins of the family. Apparently there is a privately published book called The Moulsford Mystery (Philip Vickers, The In-Hand Press, Farnham, Surrey, England, 1995), which includes more on this and reminiscences of the artist William Havell, but only 100 copies were printed (I think Reading Museum has one but grateful if anyone has a transcript?).

They farmed for some time at Southbury/Sowbury farm.

Grateful for help on any aspect of the above.

Matt

No - lots of people have accepted this in their family trees but to me it looks like a baby who was born and died in September 1909.

His father was Frederick Foss c 1826 - 1909 (?).

Ideally trying to find out when Frederick arrived (was he first or did he follow his son), and where in Germany they may have been from. DNA test hasn’t been much help.

Why do you think the father was living in England?

Debra  :)

Hi, it’s a family belief, but I haven’t yet found evidence to confirm.

Did he marry Elizabeth Gerken on 29 Apr 1872 in Bethnal Green

ADDED Image on Ancestry gives his father as Frederick Foss occupation Postman

Yes, he married Elizabeth Gerken, and dna confirms that.

Hi All,

Looking for any help on locating Henry Francis Frederick John Foss c 1846-1912, who was born in Germany.

His father was Frederick Foss c 1826 - 1909 (?).

Henry doesn’t appear in the censuses until 1881, although his children appear to be born here from 1873 in the East End.

Ideally trying to find out when Frederick arrived (was he first or did he follow his son), and where in Germany they may have been from. DNA test hasn’t been much help.

Henry also appears to have been a lighterman but in the enclosed docks only at the old King George dock. The Albert  dock & Victoria dock. They could only take the lighters from the ships to the lock & vice versa.

Grateful for any help!

Matt

Hello,

I am helping a descendent of Rhys Davies Knight and would be happy to exchange information, and try and work out more about the origins of the Knight family. He also has a dna test on ancestry.

The family story seems fascinating, especially as Rhys senior disinherited one grandson in favour of another, Rhys Powell, who later built Cray y Nos.

The family are also connected to Dora Langlois, the writer and actress.

I think that this is the death certificate for John in 1910. Frustratingly can't seem to find a newspaper report, and not certain which coroner's district this was - I suspect they don't have records for 1910 anyway but have sent an enquiry to LMA.

Grateful for any help/thoughts on what other records may be work checking in case I'm missing anything.

Yes, I have it and it does. I meant that I believe that it is the Peter in the census. Hopefully finding John’s birth will help confirm the mother.
