Stirlingshire / Re: HOGGAN and Lynch connection
« on: Thursday 09 May 19 06:41 BST (UK)  »
I am coming back to post No 82 re a connection between Hoggan and Lynch (my surname). I want to explore this one a bit more now that I have more time (just retired) to trace through Owen Lynch through Philip Lynch. I do not have a Jane Lynch - I have a Jeanie Lynch. are these two first names interchangeable in Scotland?

I am tracing my family history back to Scotland from Australia. The original (and only) Lynch that came to Australia on his own from this family was Edward Robert who was born in Balmaghie, Kirkabright, Dumfries, Scotland (1951 genus below). Arr in Sydney 4.9.1856 on the "Lloyd" I am now trying to trace the rest of the family in Scotland. to see what happened to them.

I have the extended Edward Robert Lynch Australian family complete from when he arrived in Sydney NSW and am happy to swap details.

The information I have located to date is that Edward Lynch is in the 1841 and 1851 census with his parents Owen Lynch. Born in Cavin Ireland and Margaret Stewart born in Meath Ireland.

1851 Census:
Owen Lynch 40
Margaret Lynch 42
Philip 19
Edward  17
John  15
Mary  13
James  10
Agnes  8
Margaret  6
Michael  4
Dolly  1

I there anyone interested in looking further into the Hoggan/Lynch family connections?

Regards
Paul

Hi Ted,

I found a Coroner's Inquest and he was found in Abercrombie River, Tuena , New South Wales, Australia in 1906, aged 69 (correct Age) and place of origin is (Argyllshire, Scotland) which is correct.

The BDM index reference is Edward Robert Lynch 1906 Tuena

The rootsweb archive seems to have a few connected postings, someone else has been tracing Love families in Wigtownshire. The full census entry for 1951 was posted here which includes Rebecca Love aged 21, an unmarried dairy maid, born mochrum.

The Love family in Mochrum seems to be that of John Love and Rosanna McBratney. It has been nicely summarised in his 1855 death entry from Wigtownshire Pages.

Kirsty

Thanks Kirsty, I never gave a thought to going through the Rootweb Archives - we are a bit slow out here in the 'Colony of Australia'. I am now going through the threads you have highlighted as I am finding - with the help of the posters to this thread - that the 'Love name' is reasonably common even when coupled with the surname Lynch.

Hi Judy

Main page url: http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~leighann/

wonderful free resource.

Kirsty

I agree, this is a great resource. I now have a far better idea of the area and how the different Parishes meld into the larger Wigtownshire as well has a sense of the history and settlement of the area.

Maggie Love

A Margaret Love was born illegitimate 22Jun1856 Stoneykirk.Mother Rebecca Love.Father not given.
There are two marriages for Rebecca Love to Philip Lynch 14Apr1863 Penninghame and to James Fitzsimons 31Oct1865 Mochrum. From the 1881 Census the Rebecca who married Philip Lynch was born in Mochrum 1834/5.In 1881 she was living in Penninghame.Cannot find the Rebecca who married James Fitzsimons.
I think that when Rebecca was married she gave her daughter Maggie to a relative Margaret Love to raise. There was a Margaret Love living in Mochrum in 1863.When Maggie married in 1880 she had lived in Mochrum for most of he days and had no memory of Stoneykirk. She mistoke Margaret Love for her mother.

Monica

This is interesting as I have Philip and Rebecca Lynch together in the 1901 census - Philip 65 and Rebecca 68 at Clary Hill Wigtownshire.

They are together in 1881 census 45 and 46 yrs at Baltersan farm again in Wigtownshire

Philip is on his own in the 1861, 1851 and 1841 census. All the way through he was a "gamekeeper". Born in Kelton KBT and the rest of the time he comes up in Wigtownshire.

Starting to look involved.

Thanks for all your help
Paul

We've just been traipsing around Wigtownshire searching for MI's and the like.

We did a quick tour of Mochrum churchyard and, strangely enough, I thought I saw the name Love. It's one of those names/words  that jumps out at you.

Judy

I know what you mean - sometimes you see a name and it just stays in your mind. I would suspect that there would be the 'Love' name in that churchyard as the more research I carry out the more my search is coming back to Mochrum, Penninghame and Wigtown for Philip Lynch and Rebecca Love

Millstream,
I couldn't see Rebecca either, though there is a Love family in Muchrom. You should do as Monica suggests and get the marriage cert. You can get some free Scotland's People credits by registering here:

http://www.ancestralscotland.com/

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Ruskie, I will try the database at Scotland's People.
