Dumfriesshire / Re: William Bryden

Hi,
Continuing the Bryden Theme. We have David Bryden born September 1804 at Elizatown, Parents William Bryden and Marion Cowan, he is not a lawful son, only son, whereas everyone else on the page is either LS or LD. We have found a birth of an Agnes Bryden also in Elizatown in January 1805, Father William, Mother Grizel Thorburn and she is a LD. Considering Elizatown was only about a dozen houses we are wondering if this could be the same William. In 1810 there is a birth of a Betty, LD Father James Lauder, Mother Marion Cowan and the entry below is Elizabeth, LD of William Bryden and Grizel Thorburn. David Bryden is my husbands 3x Gr. Grandfather and we would love to find an answer, we have a theory that William is Davids father, as he is listed on Davids death certificate and is a farmer which Grizel Thorburns husband was at Hartfield( about 2 mins walk from Elizatown). In Kirkpatrick Juxta Churchyard there is a headtone with James Bryden in Eliza who died May 1806 aged 76, also Janet Murray his wife who died 1806 aged 75, and it is erected by his sons William and John. In the 1790 Eyedraft of Elizatown there is a James Bryden staying there and we think he could be the William who married Grizels father. William and Grizel are buried in Johnstonebridge Churchyard.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Folks,
I have photographs of Elizatown taken a couple of months ago on a very sunny day, there are only about 3 houses in ruins that you can see, it's a trek down to the river from Hartfield farm, I also have the eye draft from 1790 from raehills estate of Hartfied farm which is the same one as at the NAS. My family are staying at the old laundry house on the estate in October if anyone would like any lookups or photos, we will do our best to help.

Lanarkshire / Re: Headstone pictures CAMBUSNETHAN CHURCHYARD WISHAW

Thanks so much, I thought this would be the case. We were hoping to get up this weekend and have a look, there is a stone with JG AM 1719 in the book and I was really hopeful it had been transcribed wrong, I thought it would maybe be the Gourley/ Weir grave in 1714, but maybe that is a bit of a stretch. Thanks agin for getting back to me so quickly.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help, I have from a book and an obituary a death in 1714 of a James Gourley/ Gourlay/ Gowrley and his wife who was a Weir. From the obituary of his Gr. Grandson in 1870 he was buried in Cambusnethan Churchyard and the stone stated their names and year of death. I ordered the MI books for Cambusnethan but there is no sign of them. Hope someone can help please.

The original post was from my husbands family, but we now have more information from Scottish birth certificates and poor relief applications if anyone can help. I have a birth of a Henry Revie in Glasgow and it states that his mother Helen (ellen) Hill ( daughter of Daniel Hill and Helen Conaghan) married his father John Revie( Reavie,Revey, McArevie, McReavie) in Londonderry on 20th October 1858. The poor relief and marriage certificates all say Londonderry, can anyone tell me where to look, would it be the Cathedral or are there many RC churches in Londonderry or is there a central place where the records are kept. I have had a look on the IGI and can't find any info so any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks. Lorna

Lanarkshire / Re: Photos of Old Dalbeth Cemetery
« on: Monday 08 September 08 10:39 BST (UK)  »
My husband phoned a Mr McIntyre at Dalbeth Cemetery this morning, he is doing all the work off his own back with no financial help from the Archdiocese. He is going in to do the work when time and weather permits but is hoping to have the West Side grassed in the near future and the grass will be cut fortnightly. He fully understood our concerns and told us that the upturned graves were buried where they had fallen and all the granite stones will hopefully be uprighted if the Archdiocese provide the funds for this. We'll just have to wait and see what happens next.
