Ok,

I throw in the towel.

I got some my information from LDS records long before SP came on line & not only have I got some dodgy information, it looks like I've got information relating to another Hugh and Agnes Adams interspersed with more recently aquired accurate info from the GROS.

In my records I have my family in Saltoun E Lothian in 1891.

1901 in Inveresk is totally weird & doesn't tally with any family reported info, but the entry is compelling.

A lot of the info I have I know is right as I have the family certificates, Hugh's war records,  and even a letter from the King, and I have reported info direct from Hugh's grandchildren, so I'm trying not to be too despondant.  I just need to revisit this line again when I go to the GROS next.

Thanks for the help with Isaac & John.  As I said, I have no familiarity with Englsih records, so that helps confirm later info.

Gadget,  some of the information is wrong. Yes, I accept that, but did you have to put it so unpleasantly?  as I said, I would look at it at the weekend, as I work away, but you kinda went off on your own anyway.

Please put me on ignore from now on & I promise not to post unless I'm at home with all my records laid out in front of me.  My family did rename later children after those who died in infancy & many did, so I have kept even dodgy looking info until I track down absolutely all the birth and death certs.  I need to update this line with all the new info that is available since I last followd them a good few years ago.

Signing off this board now.

Hi Fiona,

Yes that would be great, thank you.

There's no rush as I will have very little time on this until the winter months.

I will pm my e-mail

Thank you

That's very generous of you Fiona, thank you.

There is certainly plenty there to check out & a lot of new children to track down.

Shame there's no cross over, but i guess the names were popular with a lot of families around that time.

I will pick these up probably next time I'm at the Records Office in Edinburgh and look for all the death & marriage certs first.

Much appreciated.

Karen

Hi All,

My apologies for the confusions I may have added - I was working across 2 pc's and keyboards and excited about maybe tracking down some info about these lost years.  I have done all my research from Scottish records as these are the only 3 English records I have after 10 years researching.

My info comes from census or what is recorded in the Scottish records, so as we all know, census information is only as accurate as the person giving, and the person receiving, and the person reading the records.

I'm at work so will need to piece all this together at the weekend, but I have Isaac's death certificate, so that's where I got his birth date.

I didn't know there was a freeBMD for Sunderland, thanks for that pointer,  but then I've only recently been able to narrow England down to  Sunderland.  A son turns up later in Northumberland, went to the mines for work.

My research has thrown up plenty of anomolies for this family & there's probably an earlier Hugh who died and was "replaced" by my Hugh a few years later.

I'll check what info I have for them for 1891 - this is really helpful all, even if it throws up more questions  :)

This family was big and mostly on the poverty line so education and being nice to the authorities ( ie census takers) probably wasn't high on their list of priorities, and that carried on for a couple more generations.

Cranston I can't comment on, I was hoping for local knowledge.  I got Remote or Rimote from original documents, I'll re look at them, but that's what I read & with a few years of practice, I'm not often too far out on turning chicken scrawl into words, but as I say, this part of the world is a complete unknown to me, so I am flying blind.

If you can bear with me I'll retrace all of my info for these three over the weekend and get back to you all.

Thanks for your efforts, it's great to get a step forward.

Cheers

Northumberland / Adams from Scotland - 2 births

Hi All,

Bit of a long shot but....

I have my Adams family do a bunk over the Border to England for a few years in the late 1890's with their brood.

They have 3 children born "England", Hugh Adams abt 1885, Remote, Cranston, Sunderland , John Adams abt 1895 and Isaac Adams 3rd May 1898.  By 1899 they were back home in the Haddington area.

John died 2 july 1916 at  The Somme, and Isaac ( Uncle Ike on his motorbike) died 21 Dec 1982 North Berwick.  Hugh is my Grt Grandfather & he died 12 Dec 1960 in Haddington. Does this line ring a bell for anyone?  If only they'd stayed for a census!

For Info, the parents are Hugh Adams & Agnes Blyth M 31 Dec 1875 & the rest of the children are:
Charles b abt 1874, Alison, b 8 Jun 1877, William B 3 May 1881, James b 21 Dec 1883, Margaret & George followed on their return to Haddington.

All of my other researchis Scotland based, so I'm stalled for now on these boys, & Hugh in particular.  Any hints or info gratefully received.

Thanks

Karen

Hi Fiona,

There are some names here that look like possibles for my lot, but I don't have any info as yet to tie them in.

I have a Helen Burnside born about 1816 in Stenton Haddington, m Alexander Litster 24 May 1840 at Noth berwick & died sometime before 1898.

I have loads of rellies to this lot in the Haddington, Cranston, Garvald area, and the names George, Elizabeth, margaret, Andrew & Isabella crop up down the generations.

It could just be coincidence, but worth asking.  The surnames that crop up via marriage ( Helen had 3 daughters, Margaret, Isabella & Ann) are Bridges, Thomson & Adams.

Any Matches?

Cheers

Hi,

Just found a Common married into my line, but no link to any of yours so far

Francis John Common  b 1874  Edinburgh ( to be confirmed)  d 1931 Edinburgh
parents John Shafto Common, master printer & Annie Butler Common
Married Christina Stewart 1898 Edinburgh
Daughters Margaret Austin Common b 1899
Annie Butler Common b 1901
Christina Stewart Common b 1904

Francis was a commercial traveller & his initial gets transcribed wrongly in both the IGI & Scotlands people for 1901.

Cheers
