South Africa / Re: Rhodesian Relatives
« on: Saturday 05 March 11 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
Well good news my fellow family historians  :) :)
...I received an email regarding a new website that contains former Rhodesian records that have been carefully scanned in their entirety into a database.

The records contain
Zimbabwe Death Notices, 1904-1976
Zimbabwe, Death Registers, 1890-1977
Index to Death Registers, 1892-1977

https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Zimbabwe_Civil_Registration_%28FamilySearch_Historical_Records%29

I myself am just starting to explore them, but they look good so far..

Best of luck in your own researches!

Regards
Stephanie

Hello Ken,

Yes, my researcher is getting every document he can, including wills, estates, birth, death, and marriage certificates, government compensation, military medal rolls...etc. Pretty much, any legal document with our family's name on it, he is getting.
If you would like information about him, please send me a private message off list. Thanks.
Yes, it is very sad to hear how things are, especially when I tell our relatives' descendants, who were all pioneers and lived there from 1894 to 1979. Now all that is left is some really good memories (and now with our researcher, some documents to go along with that. :))

Regards,
Stephanie

England / Captain's license
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 19:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have an odd question and hope someone can offer some insight to this.

I have an ancestor born in England in 1787, would became a sea captain. He sailed a ship to South Africa and requested permission to remain in the Cape Colony, South Africa in 1813 where he then lived out the rest of his life. He continued to be a captain of 4 other ships and worked the waters around South Africa until his death.

Can someone tell me how I would go about finding out how he became a captain? Royal Navy connections? Merchant fleet? Do anyone know what would have been required and "if" such records exist for a license? He was a pretty young captain when he arrived in South Africa at the age of 25.

  Thanks in advance!

Stephanie

Suffolk Completed Lookup Requests / An Odd Question? A Captain's Licence
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 18:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I have an odd question and am hoping someone can offer an answer.

I have an ancestor who was born in Suffolk County, England in 1787 and became a sea captain. He sailed a ship to South Africa, where he requested permission to remain in the Cape Colony, South Africa in 1813 and he lived the rest of his life there.

Can anyone tell me how I might go about finding "how" or if a records exists on when he may have become a sea captain in England?? Would he have had to joined the Royal Navy or just been part of a merchant fleet?? He only would have been 25 years old when he sailed to South Africa, so a very young captain indeed.

  Thanks in advance.

Stephanie
