I am looking for information on a JAMES RUSK born about 1800 in Northern Ireland, who was a member of the Queen’s Own Militia. I have found Pay records for a James Rusk in the Canada, British Army and Canadian Militia Muster Rolls and Pay Lists, 1795-1850 on Ancestry, showing him to be a part of the Provisional Battalion of Incorporated Militia or Queen’s Own, in 1838 and the 3rd Battalion of Incorporated Militia in 1839, all based in Canada (Upper Canada).

It has been mentioned that James Rusk was stationed at Gibraltar and that is where he met and married Mary Ann Magill, the daughter of an Irish soldier and his Spanish wife.

But I have found the marriage record of James Rusk to Mary Ann McGill [sic] in May 1838 in Toronto, Ontario…

St. James Cathedral, Toronto, Ontario - 12 May 1838, by license, James RUSK, of the township of Cavan, in the district of Newcastle, bachelor, sergeant in the Queen's Own Militia, and Mary Ann McGILL, of the city of Toronto, spinster.  Witnesses, Samuel McGILL, Joshua REYNOLDS.

So...I am looking for any suggestions/pointers as to where I can search online to prove/disprove this information about James Rusk being posted to Gibraltar, possibly find more details about how he happened to be stationed in Upper Canada in 1838-1839 as well as any documents when he signed up for military duty that might show his correct birth year, birthplace and/or family members…

Thanks in advance. :)

Ireland / James RUSK born abt 1800 Northern Ireland; info prior to 1838?
« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 21:59 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for background information on a JAMES RUSK, born about 1800 in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, I have no further info on him such as exact birthplace/town/county or any names or occupations of his parents or siblings… :-[

I have been told he served in the Imperial Army at Gibraltar where he met and married Mary Ann Magill, the daughter of an Irish soldier and Spanish mother, and that they emigrated to Canada about 1843 and settled in Cavan Township, Durham Co., Ontario.

I have found a marriage record for a James Rusk and Mary Ann McGill [sic], not in Gibraltar but in Toronto, Ontario, Canada:

I have also found Pay Records for a Sgt. James Rusk (as well as a Samuel Magill) in the Canada, British Army and Canadian Militia Muster Rolls and Pay Lists, 1795-1850 on Ancestry, but as the records do not show age or birth date of either of these men I am not 100% they are the correct people.

Based on Canadian Census Records from 1861 on wards; they did reside in Cavan Township, Durham, Co., Ontario, and James & Mary Ann Rusk had 10 children (5 boys, 5 girls) of which 3 sons ended up in Saskatchewan, 4 daughters ended up in USA, and 1 son stayed in Ontario.

I have also found that Mary Ann Magill Rusk died in Michigan in 1904 and shares a headstone with two of her daughters and their husbands.  I have yet to find a death date for James Rusk, but based on Census records believe he died prior to 1891 and assume in Ontario.

Ideally, I am looking for any suggestions/hints/pointers as to where I can search online for James Rusk's birth date and birthplace and finding the names of his parents and siblings would be a bonus… … or is it all just a hopeless search…. ???

Thanks in advance… :)

Nottingham Completed Lookup Requests / Newbound family in Oxton, Nottinghamshire
« on: Friday 31 January 14 21:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello - looking for a connection (if there is one?) between John Newbound (b abt1801 Oxton) who married Sarah Tomlinson (28 Nov 1825 Oxton) and had a son named Samuel (bap 1 Feb 1835 Oxton)    AND  George Newbound (b abt 1802 Oxton) married Ann Shepherd (5 Jan 1824 Car Colston) and had a daughter named Elizabeth (bap 4 Dec 1825)

to explain what I DO have...(a bit longish).. George & Ann's daughter, Elizabeth Newbound married Richard Swift in 1847 and among many children, she had a son, Reuben (b 1865) who is shown in the 1881 Census as farm servant with Samuel Newbound and his wife & family - just trying to see if Reuben is actually staying with his mother's cousin or if they are a relative at all???

Thanks in advance for any info!!

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Purnell, Joseph - born abt Feb 1810, Bristol
« on: Monday 30 September 13 21:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi - I am looking for info on Joseph Purnell born abt Feb 1810 Bristol (have actual date of 9 Feb 1810 but not sure if a) accurate, b) birth date or c)christening date) have no info on parents names, of which I would very much like to have....

Also, he emigrated to Canada prior to 1847 as his eldest daughter born in Ontario 1847.  Am told Joseph's wife's name was Hannah Wheeler, but unable to discover (as yet) whether they married in UK or Canada.  (have info that Hannah Wheeler (sp?) birth date was 2 April 1826 born in UK)

So if possible I would very much appreciate it if I could find out Joseph's parents names and whether he married Hannah (or perhaps someone else first) in UK or ?

Thanks very much in advance! :)

Wow!!  :D  Thanks very much, Madri & Glen Field, for all  the information!

I was very surprised (and very very happy ;D) with all the information that you folks have found....(and how quick you've shared it!) super! :D :D

I was finding it very frustrating with the variation of names and surnames for those I was looking for and have come across some of the listings you have mentioned, but was never sure if it could be the same people I was looking for....

The only problem is that in finding the marriage of Mary Elizabeth Dempster & George Boyce - there is a George Boyce that dies in 1886 Dec (47 years) Yorkshire; my first thought was okay, she married George (I don't think her step-brother would be that old, would he?)but George passed away a year later (hence the 1891 Census showing a Mary E Boyce as widow) but there is also a George Boyce w/ wife Mary shown in 1891 & 1901 Census in Cambridgeshire (I think it's Cambs) -  so in that regards I'm still pretty confused ???

I have found some birth records for Elizabeth Dempster/Dampster that suggest she was born in a Union Workhouse in Ely, Cambridgeshrire, while other listings just indicate Ely, Cambridgeshire...  (any ideas as to why her mother would be in a workhouse and why she would give birth there - if that is the case??)

I initially had the BC Vital Stats Death Record for Stander William Lawrence and saw the parents names on it - having no luck with finding any info on Elizabeth Boyce & John William Lawrence I then did some searching but nothing definite and eventually sent away for SW's birth certificate which is good to have, but didn't really help very much more...

Again, my huge huge thanks to you both for your details/information/suggestions, etc!!  I greatly appreciate it! :)

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Lawrence, Stander William b 1892 Leeds
« on: Friday 28 January 11 04:22 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for further info on the parents of Stander William Lawrence born 9 Oct 1892, South East Leeds, County of Leeds.

I sent away and rec'd the Birth Record from the UK Register office hoping to find further specifics of his parents (with a surname like Lawrence there seemed to be no other solution)

Birth Register info:  Fathers name: John William Lawrence occ: (master) bricklayer
Mother's name: Elizabeth Lawrence formerly Dampster
Address at Birth: 39 Fleece (Heece?) Lane

Have tried looking for John/John William/William Lawrence and Elizabeth Lawrence and Elizabeth Dampster/Dempster (attempting to find the marriage info) but so far there are too many solutions.... :-\  Just looking for some census or other document that might narrow things down - year of birth/place of birth, etc...for either parent

Any assistance or even guidance in other options/locations to search, would be greatly appreciated....

Ah, yes - I also received a message from Neil about a new posting, and then later he emailed me again saying after he had thought more about what he had posted and after further discussion he decided to have it removed...

I'm sure he will write his own reply here soon....

So you're not needing glasses nor are you crazy  :)
