The 1939 National Register (n.b. Not a census!) was updated by the NHS after the war, until the 1990s.
Changes of name were recorded - and that probably happened in your case.

SNAP! GR2

Thank you

These registers were used for various official purposes for many years after 1939.

Gwendoline Finch has been scored out in green and the name changed to Mary G. Chick. Mary G. Finch married Leslie W. Chick in 1950, so this has been updated to her married name. One of the annotations was added in September 1951 and another in March 1960. Presumably, at the time of the 1939 register she was called by her middle name.

Thank you

Hello,

I have found a very strange entry in the 1939 England on Wales census.

Buckinghamshire,  Newport Pagnell.

I am tracing my family and I have looked up a person called Gwendoline Finch but there’s a line through the entry and the name Mary G Chick and lots of other words I can’t read.

Can anyone decipher this for me?

Sidney Young

Reference: 1893  D Quarter in HENLEY,IN THE COUNTIES OF OXFORD, BERKS AND BUCKIN

£3 for the death entry from the GRO. It might give some clues to his exact place of death

Thank you

Can't find a burial record online.  He is on the 1851 census with parents William & Ann

Doesn't appear to have left a will but you can search here

Thank you for looking -

Buckinghamshire / Sidney or Sydney Young burial -

Hello Buckinghamshire

I am trying to find out where Sidney or Sydney Young is buried. or his Will

I have found this record on Ancestry - but I don’t think he’s buried in Medmenham.

He was born in Wiltshire, and somehow ended up working as a gamekeeper in Newton Blossomville in Buckinghamshire - where he could have fathered a child.

My 100 year old father’s DNA and speculative family tree seem to imply he could be my dad’s grandfather. It’s an all a bit tricky as my father was adopted. I have a few old trees on Ancestry with him on.

Name: Sidney or Sydney Young
Gender: Male
Death Age: 57
Birth Date: 1836 Wiltshire
Death Date: Approximately 1893
Death Place: Medmenham, Buckingham, England
FHL Film Number: 1967102
Reference ID: item8 Pr145/1/8 p65 cn518

Any thoughts welcome …

I wonder if Herodias would have been noted in the 1871 census as head of house, if Joel was just working away?

To put my supposition to the test I think my only option is to contact the Woods descendants and see if a Sidney Young connection appears in their DNA results.

Or I suppose they might have family knowledge.

At the moment completely supposition based on the fact he was lodging with them in 1861?

But I was intrigued to see that Joel Woods & Herodias Woods are living at separate addresses in the 1871 census.

I have no DNA link yet to the Woods family - I will have to ask one of the descendants of Florence Woods to do an Ancestry DNA test. And see if they have a connection to Sidney Young & Wiltshire. I have located the descendants  but not made contact yet.

Also intriguingly, as I wrote earlier my Dad has a strong DNA connection to the Finch family & The Ruffhead family - and William John Woods marries Elizabeth Rebecca Finch - she is descended from Finch (father), Ruffhead (mother) & Ross (grandmother).
