The reference is HO.107/2268

I went back page by page on the census but could not find any regiment mentioned.

thank you for your reply. I will have a look at that.

I do not know what regiment he was in, the census just shows them as 'private soldiers',  apparently the 'Green Howards' are based there but I do not know how long ago they were formed.

Hi

I am trying to find John Carter..b1827 Cheltenham Gloucestershire.

I have him with his father in 1841..in Cheltenham.

I think he was a soldier in Fullwood Barracks in 1851 but I am unable to trace him after that. Is there some way I can find out if he died whilst a serving soldier?

My interest in tracing my family history was sparked about three years ago when I was given my gt grandparents family bible. I wonder what they would think of my efforts to uncover the past....lol....they would probably hope the family skeletons remain buried.

Having a senior citizen moment.  When I put the correct name in, I was able to use the occupation box.....but it made no difference to the outcome. I expected to see a list of gas managers...named George...lol

Only problem is..when I go on under my username it does not give me the option of ..occupation. I get it when I use the link you provided but it will not accept my password
