Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: Help finding Dundee Street name Census 1911
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 12:01 BST (UK)  »
If you are looking at the box at top left, that's not the address. It's Dundee Combination 8th, under the heading of Civil Parish and Parish Ward. Or to put it another way it is the 8th ward in the civil parish of Dundee.

The actual street address is in the column headed 'Road Street etc and number and name of house'.

Unfortunately the line reading 'Screenshot 2021-03-28 .... is obscuring the box where I would expect to find the name of the street so all I can tell is that the house number is 10.

Doh! Looks like East Hendersons Wynd.  Thanks for quick replies

Angus (Forfarshire) / COMPLETED - Help finding Dundee Street name Census 1911
« on: Sunday 28 March 21 11:41 BST (UK)  »
Ive been looking at the 1911 census for my 2 x Grand Father George Taylor and his wife Margaret. The record shows that the family in what appears to be 10 Combination Street, Dundee in the parish of St Davids. The census notes that George and Margaret had been married 6 years had 3 children of whom only two survived, my Grand Father George aged three and a brother Robert aged six.

Ive heard of Constitution street in Dundee which is in St Davids parish but never combination street. Can someone check the writing and see whether the agree it looks like combination street?

Thanks

Renfrewshire / Margaret QUEEN 1841 census
« on: Saturday 06 March 21 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
Im looking for some help deciphering the Census from 1841 for my 2 x Great Grandmother Margaret Queen who was aged 11 at the time. Margaret QUEEN was born in 1829 in Renfrewshire to Catherine HEENEN, age 28, and Martin QUEEN, age 29. In 1841 I believe that the family were living at South Croft Street in Paisley. The record shows:

Name Wedow Queen Age 40
         Mary Queen    Age20
         Francis Milpatrick Age15
         Margaret Nealey  Age15
         Bridget Queen.    Age15
         Catherin Queen.  Age13
         Margaret Queen. Age11

I take it that wedow is short for widow?? Was that common practice then? Theres no mention of Martin Queen who presumably was deceased. Also does anyone know what sort of accommodation it was back then, presumably multi occupancy dwellings. I also see that it appears that a number of the household may have been born in Ireland. I was aware that her mother Catherine HEENEN (Wedow Queen) was from Ireland although I don't know where or when. Whats a good source to trace Irish family ancestry

Aberdeenshire / Charles Gordon and Elizabeth STEPHEN
« on: Sunday 28 February 21 16:01 GMT (UK)  »
My 3 x Great Grand father Charles GORDON was born on 9 July 1795 in Aberdeenshire, the son of Elizabeth STEPHEN and Charles GORDON.

I cannot find any record of the marriage between Elizabeth and Charles.

From ancestry I can see that Elizabeth Stephen was born on 17 December 1777 in Tyrie, Aberdeenshire, to Barbara Mitchell and William Stephen.

Elizabeth Stephen married Alexander Ogston in Tyrie, Aberdeenshire, on 2 April 1797 when she was 19 years old.

My 3 x Great Grand father Charles GORDON would have been 2 years old at the time. He later married Isabella CADGER on 28 May 1829 in Strichen, Aberdeenshire.

I cannot find any trace of my 4 x Great Grand father Charles GORDON other than the baptism record for his son that he had with Elizabeth STEPHEN. Any assistance with tracing either his birth or death would be appreciated. When driving around known family areas such as Tyrie and Strichen a few years ago I discovered that some church records were destroyed in a fire and so it may be that any trace of him has gone.

Shropshire Lookup Requests / Hedley Ratcliffe and Blanche Amelia Griffin
« on: Friday 26 February 21 08:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I'm trying to trace details on the family of Hedley Ratcliffe who was born on Jul 1904 in Atcham, Shropshire, and Blanche Amelia Griffin whom he married during July 1932 in Atcham. I believe that Hedley may have worked as a nurse in the mental hospital. At some point the family moved to Hereford. Their son Gordon Ratcliffe who was born in 1934 is my father in law.
