Hello Cullenfamily,

The Creighton folk are not tied into my ancestry, my interest is merely my familiarity with the area. I always thought what you describe as ‘’a very large farm’’ on Roger’s site was the Aghadrestan rather than Aughaloor location.

Though the family have spread their wings I still think you can tie down one of the family who took back control of one of the three bars they were formerly associated with in Corracoggil if you venture down that way anytime.

Whoever the parents are obtaining the marriage record will resolve any issue you have and continued speculation is avoiding putting this to bed. The father’s name and the townland will be shown and if they prove not to be Aughaloor but Aghadrestan then your connection to Andrew and the Mannion mother is tenuous. The 1862 baptism for a Winifred relates to the Creighton/O’Gara folk from Aghadrestan. A gap in the parish records (1863-1865) does not help us and the availability of the Civil Marriage record is critical to your research.

In addition to your Winifred there was another Winifred Creighton of a similar age married to a Francis Corrigan in 1886 from Kiltybranks which again is within the Loughglynn/Lisacul Catholic Parish.

You may wish to wait to see what transpires from the latest news on http://www.irishgenealogynews.com/2016/08/onlnine-launch-irish-birth-marriage.html before requesting a copy of the GRO record.

The church records are made up of registers from two church’s and the more complete are the Loughglynn registers which shouldn’t cause an issue for your Aughaloor folk. Lisacul registers are not as complete pre 1860.

Hello Cullenfamily,

I think the general trend of the comments are suggesting you may be missing a generation and the parentage is more likely the Creighton and Gara combination.

Details from the Parish registers and burials for residents from Aughalour for Andrew and his wife are below
Mrs Andrew Creighton(Mannion) Feb 9th 1891 aged 73
Andrew Creighton Sept 8th 1891 aged 85.

The corresponding Civil records are likely to be 1892 for Andrew and 1891 for his wife. Given the ages and your marriage date it is more likely her father was Michael which you could solve by obtaining the specific details from the Civil record entry.

Mayo / Re: Lavin in Clooncarha
« on: Saturday 19 March 16 00:26 GMT (UK)  »

When looking at Civil records for the area the registration district(SRD) is Swineford which is further partitioned into what are known as dispensary districts. The dispensary districts For Swineford are Foxford, Kilkelly, Kiltimagh, Lowpark and Swineford.

People from the Kilmovee area would more commonly associate Ballaghaderren ( part of Roscommon from 1898) as their primary centre of population and when they left they would use Ballaghaderreen on mail as this was the centre from which their mail was distributed. Such is the connection to Ballaghaderreen, Roscommon today that a large part of the parish have Roscommon Eircodes (postal/zip codes) rather than one for Mayo.

I would look for a connection for the Lavin people of Clooncarha with Kilkelly by way of land transfer (http://www.valoff.ie/en/Archives_Genealogy_Public_Office/ ) or marriage into the townland as the Lavin name is not present at the time of the Griffith valuation.

A  Michael Lavin and Mary Leech of Kilkelly had a daughter Mary in 1859 and by virtue of location may be a connection to your John. The earliest births for a Lavin/Lavan connected to the townland Clooncarha appear about 1864 and the earliest marriage was again 1864 for a Thadeus Lavan to a Catherine Hopkins which may support the view that they moved into the townalnd between 1856 and 1864. I would also be very flexible with you birth year reference from the census. Dates of birth/ages were at best estimates as they were rarely the preoccupation they are today.

As for School records the only records which have been microfilmed in the parish relate to Clooonamna School which falls between Kilkelly and Clooncarha and would not have drawn children from either area.

You may wish to establish if the entry you have is actually  a RC and not infact a CofI entry
http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/generic.php?filename=centres/ifhf/sources.tpl

If the transcription shows it as a RC record it may be a transcription error and you are probably best raise the issue with the particular IFHF office.

There are potentially two Patrick Dolan fathers of interest and as the general Frenchpark area can be regarded as falling into two Catholic parishes either may be possibilities as the father of your Andrew. Unfortunately the records for the Kilcorkey Parish date only from 1865 and will not provide details of his birth, though a marriage of an Andrew may appear in the church records similar to the details below for the civil record in 1873.

A marriage of another Andrew Dolan in 1873 in the registration district Castlereagh which covers Frenchpark may assist by way of excluding him from your research should his father also be Patrick. You will need to obtain a research copy of this document or subscribe to rootsireland, both of which should identify the father’s name and townland. You will only find the mothers name from the baptismal record and unfortunately only records for the Tibohine parish are available.

Roscommon / Re: Luke Hayden and Elizabeth Mullany, married in Roscommon 1871

As a baseline, the Tithes http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=&firstname=&county=&parish=&townland=glora&search=Search
do not indicate a family Hayden or Hedian, though a Mughan (Meehan/Meegan) were present. Edward Hayden possibly married into the land circa 1830’s given the estimated birth of Edward jnr of circa 1835 from his RIC details.

Hello again Heather,

When you visit next year you may find enquiring of the Valuation office http://www.valoff.ie/en/Archives_Genealogy_Public_Office/  of the revision books noting changes to the tenancy of the land holding in Glooria, Ardcarne, Roscommon.

The Griffith Valuation has the townland spelled as Gloria rather than Glooria and another anomally that may need addressing is the entry for Edmind Hedian. Edward can be interchangeable for Edmund and it may be the case the surname had been altered from Hedian to Hayden. If the same plot of land is occupied by Edward (decd) family in the 1901 census it may support the theory of the name variation suggested. The plot lies adjacent to that of a Meehan who may be the connection to Mary Meegan noted in a previous comment.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&PlaceID=1106782&county=Roscommon&barony=Boyle&parish=Ardcarn&townland=Gloria

It should also be noted that a Meehan family remain in Glooria to date and the obituary below
http://rip.ie/showdn.php?dn=213571/JohnMEEHAN/Cootehall/Roscommon may help in a point of contact on your future visit.
