The earliest one found recorded in Kent was Axel in the 1600s and Axell a little later. Several spellings are recorded but this is not unusual.

Noticed the name and had to reply. The IGI is not quite right her middle name was Gibbons after her mother's maiden name (she was born in wedlock). Her farther was Henry Excell and her mother was Elizabeth Gibbons. One of Sarah's younger brothers was Thomas Excell my Great Great Great Grandfather. There are lots of Excells around with various spellings. I must admit it was not a name I had come across before until I started looking at my family on my mother's side.

KA,
Regarding your old posting below, my GGG Grandfather was William Humphrey b. 1827 in Brenchley. Perhaps related to Frances. Have you got any further with this prease.
John

YES.  YES!  YES! They feature.  I have a Charles Tampsett b. Cranbrook married to a Frances Humphrey b. Brenchley.

I think Charles is son to William and Mary, but can't prove it. They should have a son, William, at some point.

I've just thought.  I've never asked you which census year you are looking in.

Regards

KA
