Durham / Irish in Co Durham

Hello, I have heard from hundreds of people over the years stating that they do not know what part of Ireland their ancestors came from.

The census so often just stated "Ireland" and the marriage cert. gave no help.

In Roman Catholic parishes pre1871 ish.....a lot of them asked for addresses of Fathers and witnesses.

From the parish of Felling Co Durham....1870 a grooms father was recorded from Ireland..... parish name and Co Armagh!

Well worth looking into the original parish registers!

Good luck!

To further confuse the issue..........Cove was renamed Queenstown in 1849.

It was just a question of reverting back to it's original name.......

Cobh is Irish for Cove.

The furthest I have got back on my Jones line is a marriage between James Jones and Jane Pugh 1824 in Eardisley.

My lot appear to be from the Welton area of Eardisley.

those of you with a British passport........it reads ..the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

It appears that the "North" is treated as seperately from Great Britain. (Quire right too ;-) )

Try saying you are Welsh to an official...he will write "British"
