Glad you are sorted, just thought Thomas McLaughlin might be related to Ellen McLaughlin and that Altyaran could be a house name.
Cathy.
It's possible. I've had the same thought, but haven't worked the connection out yet (if there is one).

It looks like it may probably be “Altagarran”, which is near Foreglen, and is a sub-townland of Baile-Muine/Ballymoney.

Yes, that's where I got my quote from:

"It looks like it may probably be “Altagarran”, which is near Foreglen, and is a sub-townland of Baile-Muine/Ballymoney."

Ballymoney townland in Aghanloo civil parish.

Altagarran sub-townland.

Hi.
Does anyone recognise the place name "Altyaran" in Derry, please.
I can't find it in Google, so suspect it's been spelled incorrectly on the marriage certificate (attached).
Thanks,
John

The Common Room / Re: 1921 Scottish Census - numbers in the Marriage-Orphanhood column
« on: Thursday 21 September 23 13:49 BST (UK)  »
I've managed to find the reason myself.

ScotlandsPeople explained it as:

"The numbers in the column appear to refer to each code. So, for example, 0 is 'single', 1 is recorded alongside 'married.' 2 related to a 'widow/widower' and so forth.

This would have been done to aid the enumerators in their task, as it is easier to add up the number of people in each category rather than have to count the initials allotted to each person. The census was then, as now, primarily carried out for statistical reasons and so if you see any pencilled in numbers or ink in a different colour, this would have been down to the enumerators collecting their figures from the details."

There ya go! 😊

The Common Room / 1921 Scottish Census - numbers in the Marriage-Orphanhood column
« on: Sunday 17 September 23 08:58 BST (UK)  »
Can any kind soul please tell me what the numbers in the Marriage-Orphanhood column in the 1921 Scottish Census might mean?
They appear to have been added later in violet ink.
Thank you.

Just to help identify the right person  The father of her child was supposedly Hugh FORD but I do not know what is on the birth certificate, perhaps jwynne can tell us.  They do not appear to have married.

FORD, -
Mother's maiden surname: RIVERS
GRO Reference: 1873  M Quarter in WANDSWORTH  Volume 01D  Page 585

In 1861 Ellen RIVERS is a barmaid in Egham, Surrey aged 26.  In 1871 she is Helen RIVERS, a housekeeper in Kingston, Surrey aged 30.  In 1881 she is Ellen FORD, a housekeeper in Brighton, Sussex aged 45.  Her birthplace is consistantly Newport, Isle of Wight.

I cannot see a baptism and there doesn't seem to be anyone with that surname living on the Isle of Wight in 1841.

Debra  :)
That's what I have.
She may not have been married, but she said she was Ellen RIVERS from Newport in 2 censuses when she was single,
The fact that Hugh Rivers FORD's marriage certificate said his father's name was also Hugh Rivesr FORD (including middle name) is clearly very unlikely, but people put what they know (or what they're told) or what they want on marriage certificates. It doesn't mean it's correct.
