South Africa / Re: Boer War - South African Constabulary?
« on: Sunday 29 November 09 08:31 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Grandfather was in the Cape York Mounted Police during the Boer War but I can not find anything other than the reference he made on his enlistment papers when he joined to fight in the first ww.  His name is Charles Magnus Soderman.  I am not sure if he went straight there from Sweden or after he moved to Australia.  Can anyone help or conform?????

Thanks

Greg

Sorry but I do not know whats happened.  You are right Carole, I didnt receive anything from you till I got the PM from you.  Sorry for any confussion.

Carole, you were spot on with Martha Corden.  I went into a chat room and was told about the free BMD website and found those details.  I have since confirmed it with marriage cert that I got hold of from a cousin who is also tracing the Collier family.

Thanks so much for all your help   :-)

I already have a copy of the marriage cert of John Collier & Susan Gwilliam.  I also have a copy of his fathers marriage cert Alfred Collier.  It states:

Married in Manchester 1878 in the parish of St Jude, Manchester.  He married Elizabeth Ambrose on the 3/6/88.
His father was John Collier - Auctioneer
Her father was John Ambrose - Confectioner

Thanks for your help.  I better head to work.
Greg

or one wife died & John remarried....

Will need to obtain some copies of birth & marriages,
otherwise you can never be sure.

You don't want to 'adopt' a family     :-\

Could start with this one.

Marriage
John Alfred Collier ~ Susan Gwilliam
Year 1904 Qtr Dec Dist: Salford  Vol 8d pg 113

The marriage will confirm fathers name & occupation & hopefully one of his siblings was a witness.

You can get the copies of certs from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

The cost of a cert is £7 sterling. I  think thats about 17 Aus$
Postage is inclusive.

Heading off to bed.
Happy hunting.

One would think that the eldest child Margaret that was born around 1850 would prob make the 1853 marriage the closest?  But I guess I could be wrong hey.

2 possible marriages

John Collier ~ Jane Tennant
Year 1853 Qtr Dec Dist: Manchester Vol 8d pg 221

John Collier ~ Jane Austwick
Year 1857 Qtr Jun Dist: Manchester  Vol 8d pg 148
