Dublin / Looking for Birney – County Dublin.
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 10:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi All :)

In my research into my Birney’s I have hit the proverbial brick wall ???, and would appreciate any assistance.

In particular, what I am looking for is the following:

1.   My Great Great Grandfather, John Birney’s Birthdate and Birthplace.
2.   My Great Grandfather, Francis Birney’s second marriage to Lucy Mullin in 1895.

1.   John Birney, was born c1820, John married Mary Duffy c1843 in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin.

John and Mary had nine children, all born in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin. John died in 1897 and is buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dun Laoghaire. John lived all his life in 13 Wellington St, Dun Laoghaire, informant was Luke Birney. Mary died in 1884 and is also buried in Deansgrange.

2.   Francis was born 1850 at 13 Wellington St, Dun Laoghaire. Francis married Mary Grantham, 25 Apr 1878 at St Michael's RC Church, Dun Laoghaire. Francis occupation at the time of his marriage is listed as “Pilot” at  Dun Laoghaire Harbour.

Francis and Mary had 8 children all born in Dun Laoghaire except for the youngest 2 who were born at North Dock, Dublin.

Mary died aged 38 in 1895, Francis remarried to Lucy Mary Mullin in 1897 and they went on to have 6 children, I would assume in the North Wall area of Dublin. Francis died at Grangegorman Hospital in 1926. Lucy died in 1955 in Dublin.

Francis and Lucy are both on the 1901 and 1911 census of Ireland, which states on both forms, how long they have been married.

I just find it strange that I cannot source their marriage registration.

Any assistance with John’s Birthplace and Birthdate, and Francis second Marriage would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

David

Dublin / My Birney's, Help Please!
« on: Sunday 13 November 11 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hello All :D
Been researching my Birney’s for a while now, but something evades me!
My Great Grandfather, Francis Birney was born in 1850 in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, the Son of John Birney and Mary Duffy.
Francis was employed in Dun Laoghaire Harbour as a “Pilot”. He married Mary Grantham in St Michael's RC Church, Dun Laoghaire in 1878. Francis and Mary then had eight children:

1.John Joseph BIRNEY b. 1879. d. 1937. John was my Grandfather. Born in Dun Laoghaire.
2.William Wilfred BIRNEY b.1880 d. 1883. Born in Dun Laoghaire.
3.Mary Jane BIRNEY b. 1882, d.1884. Born in Dun Laoghaire.
4.Ellen BIRNEY b. 1883, death unknown. Born in Dun Laoghaire.
5.Teresa Mary BIRNEY b. 1885, d. 1887. Born in Dun Laoghaire.
6.Francis Joseph BIRNEY b. 1886, d. 1941. Born in Dun Laoghaire.
7.Constance BIRNEY b. 1888, death unknown. Born in Dublin.
8.William BIRNEY b. 1892, d. 1918 (WW1). Born in Dublin.

Francis’s Wife, Mary Grantham died after the birth of William, although I have not found here death record as yet.
Now, here’s where it get’s interesting as Francis appears on the 1901 Dublin census with a new Wife named Lucy. They resided at 20 Lr. Oriel Street (North Dock, Dublin). Lucy place od birth is stated as Galbally, Co Tipperary. Lucy is 25 and Francis is 44. They appear again on the 1911 Dublin census living in Church Rd, North Dock, and the census form states they have been married 14 years which would make their year of marriage to be 1896.

Francis and Lucy then had six children.

1.Annie BIRNEY b.1898, death unknown. Born in Dublin.
2.Elizabeth BIRNEY b.1901, death unknown. Born in Dublin.
3.George Joseph BIRNEY b. 1902, death unknown. Born in Dublin.
4.Agatha Margaret BIRNEY b. 1905, death unknown. Born in Dublin.
5.Leo Francis BIRNEY b. 1906, emigrated to USA 1926, death unknown.
6.Veronica Mary BIRNEY b. 1911, death unknown. Born in Dublin.

Francis died 1926 in Grangegorman Hospital, Dublin. Lucy died in 1955 in Dublin.
Lucy Birney was living at 31 Tolka Road, Drumcondra, Dublin, in the Dublin City Electoral Rolls 1939-40.

What I cannot understand is why I cannot find the marriage of Francis and Lucy……..unless they never married!
Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

Kind Regards

Dublin / My Birney's of Dun Laoghaire

Well, here goes!................and G’Day from Oz

I have been researching my family tree now for a number of years, and was wondering if anyone in the area could enlighten me as to any additional information with regard to my Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Great Great Grandfather.

Would be absolutely marvelous if anyone on the forum were familiar with any Birney’s that came from, or still are, in the Dun Laoghaire area. Any help with the name Grantham would also be appreciated

My research so far, has told me the following:

My Grandfather was John Joseph Birney, born in 1879 at 10 Carrolls Cottages, Adelaide Road, Dun Laoghaire.
John Joseph married Elizabeth O’Mara in 1905 at St Laurence O'Toole RC Church, Seville Place, Dublin.

John Joseph and Elizabeth moved to Clydebank, Scotland very shortly after marriage. They had nine children, one of whom is my Father, Francis, who is currently 88 years of age and living in Perth, Western Australia.

My Great Grandfather was Francis Birney, born c1851 (No details as to where he was born). Francis married Mary Grantham in 1878 at St Michael's RC Church, Dun Laoghaire. His address at time of marriage was 13 Mellington St, Dun Laoghaire. Francis occupation at the time of his marriage is listed as “Pilot” at the Dun Laoghaire Harbour, which I find very interesting.

Francis and Mary had the following children:

John Joseph Birney (see above)
William Wilfred Birney b1880, 6 Millifont Avenue, Dun Laoghaire
Mary Jane Birney b1882, 2 Kelly's Ave, Dun Laoghaire
Ellen Birney b1883, 6 Adelaide Road, Dun Laoghaire
Teresa Mary Birney b1885, 48 Patrick Street, Dun Laoghaire
Francis Birney b1886, 12 Clarence St, Dun Laoghaire
Constance Birney b1888, 17 North Dock St, Dublin

I have Francis and Mary Marriage Registration, but have no idea where he was born, same for Mary.
Mary Grantham’s Father was William Grantham (Sailor) who married Mary Moore in 1855 at St Michael's RC Church, Dun Laoghaire

My Great Great Grandfather was John Birney, born c1834, once again I have no idea where John was born.
This is where I am totally confused!!.....I have John married to a Bridget Keogh and a Mary Duffy!!.....I cannot recollect what one is correct, pretty poor eh? John married in 1857 at St Michael's RC Church, Dun Laoghaire. I have no information as to John’s address at time of marriage, but his address at time of death (1897) was  13 Mellington St, Dun Laoghaire. John’s occupation at time of death is listed as “Diver, Dun Laoghaire Harbour”. So like his Son, Francis, there is a huge connection to the Harbour at Dun Laoghaire.

John and Bridget/Mary? had the following children (but there may be more!!)

Ellen, Francis, Teresa and Peter……………..No idea where they were born.

That’s probably enough for now!.........If any kind soul has any information, no matter how trivial, it would be so very, very appreciated.

Kind Regards

Dublin / Birney Family Dun Laoghaire
« on: Saturday 22 September 07 13:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi All

My name is David Birney and I have been researching my tree for a while now and have hit the proverbial brick wall in trying to find out where my Great Grandfather, Francis Birney was born and where his Parents (Father was John Birney) could have originated from. From his Death Registration, Francis was born c1851. Francis married Mary Grantham in St Michael's RC Church, Dun Laoghaire in 1878. At the time of his Marriage, Francis was living with his Parents at Millington St, Dun Laoghaire, which was his Father's address at the time. His Father John was born c1834.

Francis lived and worked in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin, Ireland. Francis was employed as the Harbour Master in Dun Laoghaire Harbour, which at the time was a British Government job. What is more intriguing is that on his Father, John's Death Registration, John's occupation is listed as a "Diver".

Trying to find out where Francis and his Father John were born has proved to be very elusive!! ???

Any help would be warmly appreciated.

Kind Regards

David
