Lancashire / Wilfred Eastwood 1893-1950 WW2
« on: Tuesday 11 November 25 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
Currently researching Commonwealth War Graves also including those who are named on family headstones in Ryhope Cemetery, Sunderland. One such headstone is for Wilfred Eastwood. Wilfred's birth was registered June Q 1893 in Bury, the son of David & Ellen Eastwood (nee Harry). In 1939 he is residing at 13 Cross Princess Street, Farnworth, Lancashire with widow Jemima Smith (nee Ingram).
Wilfred marries Jemima 9th June 1943 at St. Paul's Church, Ryhope, Jemima originally from Ryhope.
The death of Wilfred, aged 56, occurs on the 2nd March 1950 at 13 Cross Street, Farnworth, death certificate gives cause of death as 1a Cardiac Hypertrophy & Dilatation 1b Arteriosclerosis. He was laid to rest on the 6th March in Ryhope Cemetery.
A section of the inscription on the headstone states: Roll of Honour, He Gave His Life For His Country
1939 - 1945.
I have been unable to find a record of Wilfred's war service, is there anyone who perhaps has carried out research or may be related to Wilfred who can shed some light as to where he served.
Would be more than pleased to forward photo of headstone to anyone interested.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hello there

Have been researching the Shillaw family name for some years now, if there is anything I can assist you with I would be only too pleased to help. As you can see from my earlier messages on this board my family line is also through Thomas & Mary Ann Shillaw (nee Cole), then to my GGrandparents James Cole & Elizabeth Ann Shillaw (nee Coates).
If you send a private message with the information you require, will see what I can do to help
Unfortunately I have no information on the Carney family.

Durham / Re: Deaths in Sunderland Shipyards
« on: Tuesday 09 April 24 14:45 BST (UK)  »
Throughout my time researching those who lost their lives while employed in the shipbuilding industry in Sunderland a number of people have been in touch with information. Would just like to say thank you to all those who have contacted me.

Also to let anyone who may be interested know that a book has been published about the research.
The Shipyard Lads. Shipbuilding Deaths in Sunderland 1830 - 1984. Priced at £4-99 with all proceeds going to Down's Syndrome North East (DSNE).

If anyone is interested please PM me.

Was unsure whether you can advertise a publication for sale on here, contacted the Support team about it but have received no reply. Have posted with the hope that it is OK if not apologies.

Not sure if you have this info, but James & Mary Ann were married in Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland.
Unfortunately Sunderland Local Studies is closed until some time in August, where you would have been able to obtain a copy of the marriage.

Possibility it may be staffed for general enquiries you could try contacting them to see if someone could help.

Thanks so much for the info, it does confirm the research I have, the four children mentioned in the Pensions Records are the four youngest, the other four children were George Edward (1894), John (1896) Mary Ann (1898) and William (1900). It does look like the family in 1871 not knowing a parents name made it difficult to pin him down on a census return. Now with his father's name I can delve a little deeper into the family.

Thanks again

I am researching the war graves in Ryhope Cemetery Sunderland. There is a CWGC headstone for Pte. William Marshall (service no. 25999) of the 3rd Reserve Btn. Sherwood Foresters. His battalion came to the North East as part of the East Coast Defence, sadly William died 28th November 1915 at was when then known as Cherry Knowle Asylum, Ryhope, Co. Durham.
Have struggled to find details about his early life, I have a marriage to Emily Alice Bowring at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Nottingham on the 13th August 1894 and found 8 children from this marriage. But I am a little unsure if this is the correct William Marshall.
Would be grateful for any information regarding William's early life.
When completed the research will be forwarded to the North East War Memorial Project website (www.newmp.org.uk) to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Thanks

Durham / Re: George Watson b. Sunderland 1813 where is he in 1841?
« on: Friday 05 August 22 15:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello

There is a George Watson buried in Bishopwearmouth Cemetery, Sunderland in January 1893. I would have looked it up for you but am unable to visit the Local History Library at this moment.

If you give them a call I am sure they would look it up for you to confirm if it is the George you are looking for (01915618439) or drop them an email (local.historylibrary@sunderland.gov.uk)

The details are: Reel 31. Folio 207. Entry no. 4123. January 1893.

I think they close at 5 today and open tomorrow till lunchtime.

Durham / Re: Sunderland obituary/Funeral notices
« on: Friday 03 December 21 18:23 GMT (UK)  »
I will be going to the Sunderland Local History Library on Monday. If you can send me a personal message with the details of who you are searching for I will take a look and see what I can find.
If you can provide the date of the deaths it would be a good help, if you only have the quarter and year it will take a little longer as the Echo's are not indexed.
