Glamorganshire / Re: Location name

Is there a marriage record  available for Mary and Willam so that we can get a maiden surname for Mary?

Trying to identify a marriage has been frustratingly difficult. The earliest known son is David born around 1818. Mary was born around 1788, this gives us a large window of around 1806 to 1817 for the marriage. You can search on Findmypast for free for parish marriages (and look at the results) https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-united-kingdom-records-in-birth-marriage-death-and-parish-records/and_parish-marriages.

Results can be narrowed by “record set” e.g. Carmarthenshire marriages. There is also the possibility that if Mary was really from Glamorganshire then the marriage took place there instead. There is no marriage in Kidwelly or Llanelli (the obvious places given William in 1851 states he was born Kidwelly and in 1841 they are in Llanelly and children are born there). In the Glamorganshire records I can’t find a suitable candidate either e.g. one that may say William Williams of Kidwelly/Llanelly.

Another thing to add to the mix is that in 1817 Mary would have been around 29 and William around 36, so either or both could have married before and/or there are earlier unknown children. There is also a gap in the known births. We have

David 1818
John 1820
Margaret 1821
Sarah 1829
Martha 1832

So the gap between Margaret and Sarah could indicate Mary of “Glamorgan” was a second marriage that happened 1822-1828, which I haven’t investigated yet

It is a tricky one. The entry is for a Mary Williams widow age 78, with her are daughters Martha 28 and Sarah 30, both born Llanelly. She  was married to a William Williams born abt 1781 Kidwelly. I can’t find her in 1851, so nothing to compare with. In 1851 she is not with her husband, who is at No. 6 Caemain, Llanelly with daughters Margaret age 30, Martha age 19 and nephew William Williams age 10 and Neice Mary Jane Rees age 10m all born Llanelly. In 1841 William, Mary and their children are again at Caemain. In 1841 it says “Y” for Mary to “if born in county”, this obviously contradicts the 1861 entry but the entry in 1861 specifically states ‘xxx’ Glamorganshire, so I think the “Y” in 1841 is probably an error?

Hi

Does anyone recognise the location in the second from bottom entry? It looks like Glamorganshire, Llannddas, but that can’t be correct. This is the actual page it’s from https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/8768/images/CMNRG9_4112_4115-0139?pid=13831692

Thank you

Hello

Does anyone recognise or can interpret what the name of the toll gate listed in the Abode for the first entry in the attached. It looks like Osbrand but that can’t be correct and I can find no reference to such a named gate.

Thank you

Wow! Even more excellent work, thank you again. Could you please provide direct links to the 1841 and 1851 records you reference for Blaenyfynnon. The HO107 etc. references are great but I have no idea how to use these on Ancestry. Thank you

Excellent! Thank you very much. Somehow for the 1851 entry Ancestry has managed to transcribe Dd as Margaret!

Hello

Has anyone come across a Blaen y Ffynon, Llangendeirne(?). I am trying to locate a Davies family who lived there in census records. There are 2 David Davies’ baptised at this address in 1848 in Llangendeirne Parish. (See attached) David Davies 31 Dec 1848, son of Thomas and Eliza (states born 03 Mar 1848) and David Davies / Meyrick baptised 08 Sep 1848, son of Humphrey Meyrick (Pont Henry) and Elizabeth Davies (Blaen y Ffynon). Humphrey I can trace

Thank you

Carmarthenshire / Re: John Rees, Margaret Rees (nee Samuel) and family in 1861!
« on: Wednesday 04 June 25 15:25 BST (UK)  »
I've just catalogued a Rees family Bible in the Welsh collection here at Jesus College in Oxford. As usual for a family Bible, it contains names and dates, which suggest that it belonged to this branch:

William Rees Born Februarry the 17 1765
John Rees Born June the 15 1767
Margaret the daughter of Israel Philpot was born the 26. Day of February about 3 of the clock in the afternoon 1793. Elizabeth Rees was Born 20 Day of October 18[0?]3

Thank you very much for this, I have only just spotted your reply. Does the bible contain any more information or mention places? Does it also detail how Margaret Philpot relates to the Rees’? Although distantly related I do have a Mary Philpot abt 1794 of Llannon who married a Thomas Daniel abt 1789 Llannon. I don’t have a father for her, but others suggest Israel as her father. There can’t be too many Israel Philpot’s around, so perhaps Mary is a sister of Margaret?

Kind regards

Roy
