Other Countries / Ancestors in India - Robbett <1900
« on: Sunday 07 December 08 19:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for some help finding the Robbett family in India (Bengal) please.

I recently found that my GG Grandmother was born and also married in Lucknow India.

Her maiden name was Mary Eliza Robbett and she was born 1875 in Lucknow.  She married Samuel Southern in 1894 in Lucknow, and they both returned to Manchester, UK sometime before the turn of the century.

From the marriage certificate i know that Mary's father was Michael Robbett and he is listed as a Clerk. He isn't listed as deceased so i guess he was still living at the time of marriage.

One of the wetnesses at the marriage is Mary Robbett, so i am hoping this might be her Mother.

I have searched through all the British India websites i have found recommended on RootsChat, but I'm not even getting close.

I cannot find references of anyone with the surname 'Robbett' in India, or a first name Michael with a surname variation of Robbett, like Rabbitt?

Would be grateful of any help please  :-*

Lancashire / 1871 Census - Missing Hinds Family Help **Complete**
« on: Friday 14 November 08 21:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm struggling to locate the Hinds family on the 1871 Census, and hoping someone can help.

Here is what i know.

My GG Grandma Martha Jane Hinds was born in Rochdale in 1860. On the 1861 Census the family are living Hulme.

Martha Jane - 1
Louesia - 1
Mary A - 3
Elizabeth Hinds - 24 (mother) (form. Smith)
Henry Hinds - 22 (father)

I know Martha Jane marries Edward Clayton in 1876 in Oldham, and her Father Henry is listed as deceased - occupation boiler maker.

I just cannot find any of them on the 1871 census,  they have vanished

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Hi,

I'm struggling to locate the marriage of Samuel Southern and Mary Eliza Raffort around mid to late 1890s (i believe) and require a little help please.

Here is what i know:

From the birth certificate of my G-Grandfather i know he was born in 1899 in Ardwick, South Manchester.  Father is listed as Samuel Southern, occupation General Laborer. Mother listed as Mary Eliza Southern, formerly Raffortt (I believe... Copy is terrible so it could be a variation of, but defiantly Raff***t).

I have found Mary E and Samuel Southern (baby) on the 1901 census. Mary E is 26 and where born is listed as Lucknow, India and Samuel is 1. They are boarding with another family (Woods) in Prestwich, North Manchester and Father Samuel Southern isn't around, so i guess he died sometime between 1899 and 1901. I have found a couple of deaths registered around this time which might be him.

Any help in locating a marriage would be much appreciated  :)

Thanks

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: 1901 Census Look-up Samuel Southern

Thanks  for you help Tricia,

I think i might just send for this Birth Certificate and hope for the best.

My Gran didn't know her Father - Samuel Southern 2nd. She didn't even know his name, so it has taken me a while to pull together the pieces.  I couldn't believe i found the marriage of Samuel and Mary Jane, as we all guessed they never married.  I had looked many times before without luck, so couldn't believe it when i came acrossn the marriage a few weeks ago.

Looks like he escapes my grasp again though.  Mary E looked really promising. Do you think it is possible she would have taken the Southern name even if they didn't marry?

Nichola

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1901 Census Look-up Samuel Southern

Hi,

Hoping someone can help, ???

I'm looking for Samuel Southern on the 1901 Census and then hopefully his birth also.  All I have is his marriage Certificate.

He married Mary Jane Doherty in 1926 age 27. So he should be around two on the 1901 census. The marriage was in a register office in Beswick, Manchester.  I don't know if Samuel had lived in Manchester all his life or not. I don't know if he had any siblings at this stage, or what his mother's name might have been.

His father is listed as Samuel Southern (deceased) on the marriage certificate and occupation - Foreman in Coal Mine

Thanks
