Thanks Anne

That really helps, it confirms she was using his name so I will now try to find a marriage.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Portsea 1871 Census - Bennett - Please
« on: Monday 29 November 04 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I hope you can help me with a look up in the 1871 census for:

William Bennett* who in 1871 I believe was living at :-

9 Albert Road, Southsea, Portsea Island, Landport
(from son Wm Henry birth cert of 1870)

Wm's* partner/wife at that time may have been
Sarah Jane Abbott.
From the result I am hoping to get to a wedding date, & other children, other searches have proved negative.

Its TV............
Light and entertaining?
All so far have included the element of the chase.

I just wonder how many man hours the programmes have taken to produce, particularly how many researchers were used? As we know it can take many months just to find a certificate or will.

Our expertise has us saying -  well Jeremy! get along to the probate and you will see where your mothers families money went, yours is still down the pit.

If only the last bit actually was expanded with some real tips and advice

Hi
I am sure it reads Printers App. (Apprentice) and the last word is the abbreviated form of Compositor the guy who put the type into a block or set prior to printing.

Hi Nell
Thank you for that look up for me.
I have just found the first marriage by trawlling through 1837 on line. in Belper JAS 1838

Although son William Bennett* to Sarah Jane Abbott which probably took place 12.03.1870 near to their first childs birth, William Henry, unfortunately I do not know where this occurred, at this date they were in Portsea,Portsmouth,Hamps still alludes me.

Hi Jen
Do not panic!!

Royal Navy Reserve ratings records I believe are still with the MOD not at NAR(only released on payment & proof of relationship)
1924-1939 Royal Navy Records DR2A Bourne Ave Hayes Middx
3rd Sept1939-todate Naval Pay HMS Centurion Gosport Hamps

So Dad's records may not be at the NAR, Kew.

However the NAR I believe do hold details of gallantry medals issued to navy personnel. When I was there last I saw some 'How to leaflets'  but  unfortunately did not pick any up.

I am no expert on Naval stuff, it may be prudent to put a plea out for help in these pages

Hi Nell

I wonder if I can take up your kind offer please.

I am trying to trace the marriages of:-
William Bennett to Hannah Curzon which probably took place in Hanley/Shelton (the potteries) Staffordshire
near to the birth of their first child* in 1839.

And son William Bennett* to Sarah Jane Abbott which probably took place 12.03.1870 near to their first childs birth, William Henry, unfortunately I do not know where this occurred, at this date they were in Portsea,Portsmouth,Hamps.

My efforts with the LDS on-line have proved negative.

With thanks

Hi
If they live in Portsmouth & Henry was in the Navy the National Archive at Kew maybe worth a visit or two.
From these pages I was prompted to obtain a book 'Tracing your Ancestors in the Public Record Office' by Amanda Bevan which I purchased at Kew recently.
Chapter 19 19.1 through to 20.9 contains all things Naval.
Available are such things as Muster Books, Pay Books, Ratings certificates, Service Records, Pensions, Reserve lists, etc etc. certainly a trip to Kew maybe of benefit I wish you luck
