Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA parentage possibilities
« on: Tuesday 29 October 24 13:01 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for those who replied with advice, yes it was My Heritage DNA  and I have applied through MOD for his records, so we can get an idea of his movements. Maybe a long shot but I would love to solve this mystery for my sister's sake.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA parentage possibilities
« on: Monday 28 October 24 15:53 GMT (UK)  »
On behalf of my (half) sister I am endeavouring to to track down her father, or at least a name. Let me just call him AA for want of a reference. Through the DNA Heritage site we managed to find someone with a high DNA count who was a great help. We got information which took us back 3 generations to a time when (AA) age wise, was a possibility. However there was no way of finding out if AA and our mother ever crossed paths. If they did it would have had to be between June and August 1941 Our mother came from the Aberdeen area, (and to our knowledge never left ). AA was from the Airdrie/ Lanark area. I'm treading warily here by not posting names. I have investigated his family but he had only one brother who was older and produced a family who were static in the Lanark area.  There seems to be other threads from different people, who one way or another have ancestors with AA’s surname, and possibly links. The DNA percentage count between AA’s gt grandson and my sister was 7.5%. Given that a recently discovered niece shares 12.5%, on our mother’s side, this seems to indicate that an ancestor 3 generations back could have easily have had 50% DNA.
AA was in the Army during WW2 but without access to his records, I cannot even guess if he was ever in the North East of Scotland. I am led to believe I can access these Army records 115 years after his birth. That would be next year.
So any suggestions as to how we could proceed given that the few tenuous links we have garnered from the DNA Heritage site seem to dry up as soon as difficult questions are asked.

Thank you most interesting. I'm just wondering how far afield John Duff was at birth. I did wonder about the three I mentioned, but now I can dispose of them. A couple of years ago before the Kirk sessions were on line, I waded through some records at Old Aberdeen trying to find if my Young ancestor was born out of wedlock. I only had half a day but I barely scratched the surface.
However again many thanks.

Thanks for the info still not sure as to when or where John duff was born. Are the kirk sessions available now on Scotlands people? They might be handy in trying to find the origin of my "brick wall" gt gt grandfather Young. I live in hope.

Thanks all I have  that info. I have a death of a John Duff in 1849, but no age at death given and his abode as being stated at Fordyce, which is out of the rest of the records which were mostly at Inveravon.
On the marriage of John Duff and Anne Kellas  (Inveravon)all it says that he was from the Bridge of Livet.
I have three possibilities 2 from Gamrie and Macduff  (1799) and one from Fordyce (1800). I'll have to do a bit more digging until I'm convinced on which way to go, if at all!

Banffshire / John Duff

John Duff was married to Anne Kellas on 12 July 1827.I cannot find a DOB for him, but I'm guessing he died sometime between 1846/47 and 1851. He appears in the 1841 census but not in the 1851. On that his wife is a widow. I have tried Scotland's People, but it looks as if he just disappeared. Any suggestions or perhaps someone in his family has the answer. I live in hope.

Thanks to all for the help. I've been otherwise occupied recently. However I am no nearer finding Alex Jamieson's death certificate. The only reference I can find is on Elizabeth's death certificate where it states she is first the widow of Thomas Rutherford (stone mason)and secondly widow of Alexander Jamieson who was some kind of loom turner, I could not make out what the first word was. Yet another mystery.

Hi "drew" well done, I had not investigated  Andrew's father. Also  have never seen that before in a death certificate though. Excellent, still wondering where he might be buried though, might investigate where George the father is buried in the event his son could be in the same lair. Good work thanks.

Hi spiderdrew,  unfortunately I have been lazy of late but I only have one son noted for Andrew Moir. I have had no more luck as to his date of death. One suggestion  was to try variations of Moir. Moire was one.  If he was perhaps buried in a paupers grave then records of that could be few and far between. I shall keep trying though. All the best in your search.
