Northumberland / Re: Davisons 1900s-?
« on: Yesterday at 17:01 »

Joseph's father on his marriage record is listed as 'Joseph Davison', and my grandfather believes Joseph (Jr.) died in 1974. My grandfather says that he had a brother named 'Harry', who married a 'Molly' and lived next door to my grandfather growing up as he was friends with their (now late) son. I haven't been able to find any details on Harry, Molly, or anything like a common MMN on FreeBMD - but my grandparents are still in contact with Harry's son's wife so will try see if she remembers anything.

Do you have a rough idea of the timeframe  in which your Granda lived next door to Harry and Molly and their son (as he's deceased do you know this son's first name?)and was this in Ashington?

I'm exploring an "outside chance possible" but am still looking for something more tangible so I can avoid sending you down a rabbit hole.

Thanks for the reply.

I contacted Ancestry who managed to sort things out.

There was no 'cancel membership' option because I had already cancelled it!  Before posting I had checked through my emails but there was no confirmation of the cancellation so assumed it still needed to be done.

Which is a reminder for everyone to cancel a few weeks in advance and if you don't get a confirmation email, to contact them and insist that the cancellation is confirmed by email.

My Ancestry subscription (using this offer) is due to expire next month and I'd like to cancel it but how?

If I go to my account settings there is no option to cancel. I can modify it but not cancel.

Any suggestions welcome.

Account Settings , scroll down to Membership Section. There is a link that says Cancel Membership.
As you are close to the end date of your sub, if you follow through it will tell you that your subscription will be active till  the renewal date so even if you cancel you can continue to use it.

When you are past the original renewal date your Membership section will say you are now a Registered Guest and at that stage you can use the link to renew at the offer price.

Has worked for me for many years now. If I had to pay the full price I would not have renewed each year so I am sure the company would rather have x years half fees than 1 year full price and then nothing while I used the library pcs/family history centre pcs /free weekends on the site/ maybe a month one off sub each year.

Good work Boo :)

Thanks Trish and Carole
Can't take any credit - FindMyPast transcription meant I found them easily but as Ancestry seems to be more widely used I looked to see how it was transcribed on there.

One side I am stuck on is "Aunty Mary": Mary married Joseph Davison - I have found their marriage record: Mary Jane Robinson, daughter of Robert (which my grandfather remembers), married Joseph Davison in March 1939 (cannot find them in the 1939 register, though). Their estimated birth years on FamilySearch are 1917, but Mary was born in Q3 1916 as the MMN (McPherson) on FreeBMD matches. My grandfather remembers that they had a son a year later - he may be still alive as far as I know so will not divulge more details. He also claims that Mary married after Joseph, but does not know names or dates, and assumes she died around 1994 (although other assumed dates have been incorrect).

They are on the 1939 Register in Ashington and Mary J does have a subsequent married name of Darling recorded
If you are using Ancestry then  she has been incorrectly transcribed using the surname Darling and Joseph is transcribed  as 'Joseth' Davison.

The Common Room / Re: Finding a couple

Jebber's suggestion is a good one.

I haven't found a way of searching the armed forces and consular returns on FindMyPast by page number but you can search by year (1945) and Location (Italy). It give 2,328 results. You could then trawl through looking for ones that just say Italy, not Venice or Bologna or wherever.  That narrows things down.  You'd be looking for page 1492, or possibly 1491 or 1493.

If you use ShaunJ's method on FindMyPast and specify the Place  as Italy, the number of results reduces to 551 which is a slightly more manageable number.

This is a 'possible' based on what ShaunJ says (there may be others)

This topic is a referendum and a vote, with the goal of letting those who use modern technologies and filters in the restoration process know whether they are welcomed by users here, or whether they are rejected. Based on the results of the vote, many matters will be judged.

As a user I am very grateful for each and every 'restore' that appears in response to an image I post. They are all saved to my files, labelled with the name of the restorer, along with the original. I don't grade them, never discount any and try to ensure that everyone gets my thanks.

I share my files with extended family and their responses to the various restores of any one particular image vary widely. Some prefer results which look like a modern photo which could have been taken yesterday, some like the ones that still seem like an old photo but are a bit sharper than the original, and some say oh but even scratched I like the original, its real and we should preserve it.

I haven't answered the poll, but looking at the responses what I would say to all the restorers is:
no matter what your chosen tools are, please continue to restore and be proud of your skills and willingness to help.
Its not a competition, I've never yet (though may have missed it) seen a 'user' response which says so and so provided the best result and everyone else need not have bothered..
You will all please someone and they will be grateful.
