Occupation Interests / Carriage Lifter
« on: Wednesday 03 August 11 19:46 BST (UK)  »
My wife's great grandfather was a railway labourer for LBSCR. Until now I did not know what specifically he did but the release of Railway Employment records on Ancestry has revealed that he was a "carriage lifter" at the Brighton Locomotive Works.

Can anyone tell me what a "carriage lifter" did exactly? I've googled it but I'm none the wiser!  ???

Occupation Interests / Worshipful Company of Plumbers
« on: Friday 14 January 11 16:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm looking for some advice.

My wife's great grandfather was a plumber in Brighton between 1891 and 1936 and his obituary in 1936 refers to him as holding "the highest degrees in plumbing including the Worshipful Company of Plumbers and the City and Guilds". The 1891 Census says he was an apprentice (age 19 at the time) and I know he went on to work for the London, Brighton and South Coast railway as a plumber.

I was wondering what sources of records might exist for this period. When I contacted the Worshipful Company of Plumbers they said that all their records were held by Guildhall Library. They did a quick check for me (1891-94) in the Freedom Register with no result so I'm not sure where to go next. Other than his obituary and his early life (up to the 1911 census) I know very little about him than that he was a plumber so any tips about where I might search for info would be greatly appreciated!

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Lutterworth Marriage c1818

Thanks Bunnygirl! That looks like it is the right marriage - the baptism date for Mary Ann Warren matches her age in the census and death records.

Best regards, Peter

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Lutterworth Marriage c1818
« on: Tuesday 10 August 10 12:22 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone check the Lutterworth parish records for a marriage for Thomas Lea to a Mary (Ann) between about 1815 and 1824 (most likely about 1818). All of their children were baptised in Lutterworth so although Thomas was from Coventry and Mary Ann was from Leicester I think it is most likely they were married there.

Thanks! Peter

Lancashire / Brick Wall... help! (Harriet Carter)
« on: Monday 14 July 08 14:43 BST (UK)  »
I've reached a brick wall - so anyone who can help I'd be eternally grateful!

My great grandmother was Harriet Carter. The only things I know about her are:

* In 1901 census she is shown aged 31 and place of birth Manchester
* In 1891 census she is shown aged 22 and place of birth Liverpool
* In Dec 1889 when she was married her age was given as 20 and her father as William, a publican
* all 3 events took place in Birmingham

I have been unable to find her in the 1881 or 1871 censuses, and the various birth registrations for Harriet/Harriett/Hetty Carter between 1864 and 1872 do not appear to be her.

In desparation I recently went through ever single Harriet(t) Carter birth in that date range (there were 16, plus 2 others from other counties that were possible) and traced the person to infant death or through the censuses until married. All except one resolved themselves into people that are not my great grandmother. The one was a Harriet Carter born in Wigan about 1868 - but this only from the census records, there is no birth registration. In the censuses her parents and siblings were all living in County Durham except for that brief period of her birth. This Harriet is evident in 1871 and 1881 but not afterwards so looked like a good bet... except that the father was Edward Carter, a coal miner not William a Publican!

I should note that I have not found ANY Harriet Carter daughter of William in 1871 or 1881.

I don't know where to go next. Two censuses suggest a Lancashire birth (although there is a big gap between Manchester and Liverpool...) and three events suggest a 1868/1869 birth date, but none of the Harriet's registered in Lancashire around those dates is her.

Any suggestions anyone?!

Thanks, Peter

Thank you so much for doing this Dawn!

From your description of the signature this does indeed sound like further supporting evidence although it leaves me wanting to see the entry for myself to determine whether it could possible have been "Gaston" that she crossed out.

It certainly is intriguing - if this is in fact Mary Ann Gaston, then I now need to figure out why she consciously signed as Brooks (and referenced her grandfather as her father) rather than, as I had assumed, it was a mistake by the registry office clerks. But this is what makes family history research so addictive!

Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.  ;)

Hi Dawn,

Yes thanks very much, that would be great if you could! I'm 95% certain that this is the marriage I'm looking for, but it would really help to see if the church registration is the same or different to the civil one. This would at least confirm or rule out any human typographic error.

Thanks in advance,

Peter
