Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: WW1 Roll Of Honour,Sharp Street, Hull

Before 2009, a WW1 Roll of Honour was attached to wall outside Goodfellows Supermarket in Sharp Street Hull. I understand it was removed for safe keeping during 2008/2009.

Does anybody know of its present whereabouts.

::) The Sharpe Street (original spelling) memorial was 'scheduled' when the Goodfellows building was sold to Sainsbury's and the latter decided not to develop the site, but sell it.  The site was due for demolition and I, (Alan Brigham, as the editor of the East Yorkshire Family History Society journal the 'Banyan Tree'), was alerted of the potential threat to the memorial by a descendant of the carver.  Together with the City Planning Department and Sainsbury's Properties Manager; the memorial was protected and a clause added to the lease of the Sainsbury's site which required that, following any development work on the site, the memorial be reinstated post development at, or as close as possible to, its current position.  It was also written into the record that the memorial should be stored in such a way that it remained visible to the public at the Carnegie Heritage Centre (Anlaby Road), the local Primary School or the local Community Centre - the Carnegie being the third-choice option.

Since then the Sharp Street Memorial has been ...

".. stored in Hull City Council's Wyke area office in Newland Avenue, which is facing an uncertain future after the authority announced plans to sell the building.

But Wyke area committee chairman Councillor John Fareham said the memorial was still available for public viewing on request.

Speaking at a full council meeting, he said it was hoped to return the memorial to Sharp Street as a condition of planning approval for new housing on the site

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / A Great Day Out in Hull
« on: Tuesday 11 September 12 16:29 BST (UK)  »
The Hull Family History Fair is only a short time away so don't forget to reserve the day for what was the region's biggest fair in 2011.  This year it is on the 29th September (2102), at the Costello Stadium, from 10am to 4pm.  The bit I like best of all is the admission price - just £1.00 each and the kids get in for free.  So why can't other fairs do the same?

Last year there were some fantastic help desks dealing with family and military research and I certainly got my money's worth from them!  I was also given a free goodie bag when I paid to get in and mine had a good tenner's worth of useful goodies hidden inside.  I understand that they will be giving away another 250 bags again this year.

I can thoroughly recomend going along.

The site which is now Hull College, (on the corner formed by Park Street/Londsborough Street and Londsborough Street/Clarendom Street)  was bombed, as were the houses on the corner of Londsborough/Clarendon (on the same side of Londsborough as the hospital).  The hospital was only damage and you can still see many of the scars if you visit the rear entrance.

The pictures show the damage to the college as viewed from what is now the car park.  In one you can see the shelter which was built in the yard and saved many lives (the 'square on' view).  Look around the edges of the second and you can see around the building at some of the other properties in the area.

Both images are from www.hull-remembers.co.uk and used with the permission of Hull Daily Mail.

The memorial was 'resued' by www.heroesofhull.co.uk about three years ago when there was a perceved threat.  The threat was not real but the outcome was that the memorial cannot be removed without the consult of the Hull Planning Dept. and only then on condition that it is replaced following any redevelopment work on the site.  HeroesofHull also arranged that it become 'listed' and two optional safe places where it would be stored (remaining on public display) during temporary removal.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Re: Cornelius Hall - Thornton Curtis?
« on: Thursday 10 November 05 02:31 GMT (UK)  »
Cornelius's birthplace is the current puzzle.  There are a few family graves in Saxby All Saints and Barrow on Humber.  I've not found him in the parish records of Thornton Curtis, his claimed birthplace.  Could be Saxby, could be Barton - but then it could be anywhere as the family wasn't scared of travel.

:D Thank you for your tips!

The Banyan Tree (et al)

I am the webmaster of the EYFHS website so I will try to answer some of the questions which were noticed on this page by my lovely wife.

The Banyan Tree

I posted a notice on the web site about the late dispatch of the Banyan Tree following a suggestion from an EYFHS member.  As stated on the web site, the delay has been as a result of the number of new publications recently launched by the Society and the extra workload this has placed on our volunteers.  We had received so many requests for the new publications that we, as a committee, decide to prioritise on the printing of the new booklets (census indexes for Beverley & Pocklington I believe) so that they could be made available for members attending a recent event in Beverley.

Email Responses

I am not sure why any email would go un-answered unless the person you attempted to contact is away on holiday, for example.  Even if you send a malformed email (e.g. allen[AT]eyfhs.org.uk instead of alan[AT]eyfhs.org.uk) it would be sent on to me, as the webmaster, for redirection.

Members Interests

When Members Interests are received at EYFHS, they are added to our 'active' database.  We do not, and never have, send out a reply; the postage bill would be phenomenal!

When a member requests information about another member, all that we do is pass on that request to the member concerned.  We never give out members information directly as we respect the privacy of all of our members.  We are also prevented from doing so by the Data Protection Act.

The web based Members Interests have recently had a major update so please, Mr Olsen, have another look.  If your interests are not there than please send then to me by email and I will post them for you immediately I receive them.  However, according to our mail-server records, no emails were received from your registered address during January.

I am currently experimenting with ways of allowing members being able to edit their own interests on the web site.  Watch the site for more...
