Hi Neil,

Hopefully I am not too late to the party.

To possibly add a wrench into this investigation, I note that there was a marriage of a Margaret Tiffen registered in Carlisle in 1862. On the page of possible grooms is listed a George Smith. Dec 1862 10b 580

I don't know if this helps or hinders at all.

Note: Check your PMs for a message from me.

Regards

Hi Sally,

I'm very glad you replied to the thread. Heather and the others have all been quite helpful with a lot of good tips and research.

I've taken a lot of the advice and started with the purchase of Mary McCallum's birth certificate. I found that her mother's maiden name was, in fact, Morrison; and not Murray. Selling that to the family is the hard part.

I believe that Heather was on the right track with the Clark(e)'s of Wigton and later Caldewgate. When I purchase Thomas's b/c it should confirm the family unit. I think, then, that it will also confirm that your Elizabeth and my Henry were siblings.

From Patrick to Henry to Thomas and then to my Grandfather, it is the slightest of threads to follow the male line as each was the sole son born into the family. But to be able to trace another line through your Elizabeth is a rare opportunity.

What's the protocol for going to email?

It's a pleasure to "meet" you and enough can't be siad for all the helpful people here at Rootschat.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Farrah of Acaster Malbis
« on: Monday 26 November 07 17:31 GMT (UK)  »
Please excuse me if this is not the proper forum.

I am researching John Farrah, b. Abt 1780 in Acaster Malbis and d. 1864 in Frome, Elgin, Ontario, Canada. Parents unknown.

In the intervening years he first joined the 21st Light Dragoons in 1806, then transferred to the 1st Veteran's Bn, and ended up pensioned in 1820/21 in Canada where he stayed.

I am in search of any information regarding this individual and can trade information of descendants.

Thank you,

Hi Izabel,

Thanks for your help. I'll see what I can find using this info. However, Trooper seems to be an unusual rank for the Artillery. One would normally find Gunners while Trooper is more in tune with the Armoured or Cavalry.

Thank you,

Ian

Armed Forces / Boer War Lookup Please

This is really a shot in the dark.

I'm looking for service info of Cornelius Curran who was a munitions carrier during the Boer War. He was originally from the Carlisle area before joining and then settled in the US after returning from South Africa.

Like I said, a shot in the dark.

Armed Forces / Lancashire Militia

I'm afraid I posted this in the wrong area earlier.

Would anyone have access to the muster rolls or other such information for the Lancashire Militia for Lancaster between 1803 and 1810? I am in search of a Robert Lighttallars, with various similar sounding spellings, who was a substitute in said militia for John? Sutcliffe although Robert was living in Carlisle at the time he joined. There are petitions for suport of his wife and child in Carlise that were heard at various quarter sessions in Lancaster. As his wife re-married in 1808 I believe Robert died while in service.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Heather,

The birth years do match up nicely for both Sarah and Thomas, but no mention of the two boys, Henry and William, who are, again, passed down by word of mouth and not by any hard evidence. By the same token, there has never been any mention whatsoever of sisters of Thomas.

I think I must purchase the birth certificate of William and Sarah's daughter, Mary, to see if that will provide a maiden name for Sarah.
