Leitrim / Re: Mitchell's---Help Needed..
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 14:45 BST (UK)  »
My Mary Mitchell was born in 1861 in Mohill, Co Leitrim and married an Englishman on 26th Oct 1881 in Weymouth England and died in Camberwell South London in 1921. I am pretty certain she never visited Ireland after leaving. The only other thing I know about her is that her father was James Mitchell a "shoeing blacksmith".

Given the small population of Co Leitrim there is probably a connection between our Mitchells but its not obvious so far! Actually looking on the map, Dromahair and Mohill are at opposite ends of the county but even so there are not that many Mitchells.

Let me know if any more clues turn up.

Owen (born c1861) was born before civil registration of births in Ireland (1864) but this might be his parents and some siblings-
Owen Mitchell m. Anne Conlon:
1. Anne Mitchell born 27 Sept.1864 Mohill dist.
2. Charles Mitchell born 24 July 1866 Mohill dist.
3. Rose Mitchell born 12 Oct.1869 Mohill dist.
4. Catherine Mitchell born 8 Dec.1871 Co. Leitrim
5. Ellen Mitchell born 10 July 1874 Mohill dist.

Don't know if there is any link but I am trying to trace records of my Great Grandmother, Mary Mitchell who was born 1861 in Mohill. her father was James Mitchell, a "shoeing Smith". The dates could allow the above to be her siblings.  I am going to try the LDS who have  a library near me as soon as I can get a morning free.

Thanks for replies. The 1911 census has produced a clear print of "Mohill, Co Leitrim" as place of birth so any doubt on that is removed.
I haven't tried the Mormons, thanks for the suggestion, a quick search shows a library only 15 minutes away!!

Thanks for your comments, Adrian.

I have spent some time comparing all the "ll"s and capital "M" s on the census page and I think you are right.

I have searched on Griffiths and there is only one Mitchell shown in Mohill, wrong first name but could be father/grandfather.
Anyway I will proceed on the assumption that this is a connection.

Thanks again for your help.

I hope I'm wrong but I understood that central birth registration in Ireland only started in 1864. (Two years too late for me)
The record I would get from Leitrim would be a baptism record.

Thanks, yes that's the word.
The first word I, am assuming, is "Ireland" and the "Co. Leitrim" is clear.
"Drumnafinnila" is a bit long to fit in unless there is a local abbreviation or the pronounciation fooled the census enumerator in Weymouth, England!
I did get a hit for a search on my great grandmother's name, Mary Mitchell, on the ".irishgenealogy" site which directs me to the Leitrim Genealogy Centre.
The year of birth (1862) and spelling is right so I suppose I need to risk the £14 fee. The result should give the place of birth, assuming it's the right Mary Mitchell.
Once again, thanks for your help.

Thanks - I tried several variations with the same result as you!

Mary Mitchell was a 19 year old Irish girl working as a maid in an English Hotel and explaining where she came from in an Irish accent to an enumerator probably with a Dorset accent!

I am hoping at some time to get to see the original census return - maybe it will be clearer than the microfilm.

But thanks again for your help.

My great grandmother was called Mary Mitchell born around 1862 somewhere in Co. Leitrim.

Her father was James Mitchell who by 1881 was described on Mary's marriage cert. as "shoeing smith deceased". I do wonder if the "deceased" bit might be a lie to enable her to marry without his permission! (she married in Weymouth England at the age of 19)

The only clue I have as to where in Co.Leitrim the family came from is the 1881 english census where the place name is illegible but looks as if it ends in "...ile" Any ideas as to how I might narrow down the search?

I know the dates don't match for your James Mitchell but names tend to stay in families and Leitrim is not that big a place!
