New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Davies Morgan
« on: Today at 01:09 »
Hi Darren

Thanks for the message. Have you made contact in your searches for your particular line, with the line of Henry William Davies & wife Hannah, parents of Morgan, Simon, Sarah, Mary Ann and 1 other.

William worked on a property named "ellesmere", and daughter Mary Ann married James Tallentire, if this helps.

If you do come across someone after this particular family, please get in touch with us.  We will keep the album until we can find the correct family.

Britt

Now that it is 2025 there is much more information available online, including official records, which aids us in gathering details for families.    I'm adding some here for clarification of Britt's message and hope it may be of assistance ??   :)

Comments for items marked in "blue" :  >

*   The name of this man appears to be Henry Edward DAVIES (rather than "Henry William")
His wife Hannah DAVIES died 16 July 1900 aged 69 /  Henry Edward DAVIES of Irwell died on 15 August 1918 aged 80.
They are buried together at Springston Cemetery, Canterbury North.   Their headstone also mentions their son Simon who died aged 16 years, on 3 February 1876.

In an adjacent plot at same cemetery, there is a headstone for Morgan John DAVIES, 1858-1938 and his wife Sarah Alice DAVIES, 1867-1941.

*   Henry Edward DAVIES, (not "William") a farmer, owned land (freehold) at Irwell.   At one time, possibly due to a boundary change, he is listed in the Ellesmere Electorate, though still residing in Irwell.   Prior to this, the electoral district he was registered in was known as Selwyn.

...  specific bequests made to his son - Morgan John DAVIES,  and daughter, Mary Ann TALLENTIRE.  His other children also named.
Confirmation (affidavit of Morgan John DAVIES) that his sister married James Everest (or Everist) TALLENTIRE (also explanation and correction, as to why her husband was erroneously described in Will as "Thomas" rather than "James").

From NZ BDM - Birth index >

1870 / 30145 - DAVIES - Mary Ann - Parents:  Hannah and Henry Edward

1874 / 37186 - DAVIES* - Mary Ann - Parents:  Emma North and Morgan
[*  Two earlier children to this couple registered as "DAVIS" ]

Hi There,
This thread is super interesting. I am so sorry that I have not been on this site for too long. Is there any chance that this information is still available as I am definitely still wanting to track down how my Morgan Davies got to NZ and where in Wales he came from.

Regards
Darren

Hello again

Not sure if you are aware of the contents of the "trees" published at the ancestry.com website for Morgan DAVIS and his wife Emma North MUMFORD ??
(The names of the supposed parents of Morgan DAVIS, along with his birthplace, are given in at least one of the trees.)

Rosina  /  Rose  STEVENTON   >

Should have mentioned that upon hearing the decision of the Court (1924 - 3 months jail), the woman (Rosina) fainted and had to be carried from the Court by policemen.   ::)
                            _____________ / /  ________________

That made me remember yet another later case ... Rose STEVENTON (something of a "drama queen" perhaps ?? ).

"Evening Despatch"  (Birmingham)  -- 24 April 1930

Headlines >  "Birmingham Woman In Scene"  /  "Found to Be Insane After Collapse"
/  Court Incident :

" A painful scene was created at Marlborough-street Court, London, today by Rose STEVENTON, shop assistant of 152 High Street, Bordesley, Birmingham   ... "

( abbreviated ) >
- charged with stealing and receiving from a Piccadilly store .. 2 hats / gloves, a coat and a handbag.

-  When store's house detective began her evidence, Steventon collapsed in the dock and began to cry out.

-  Later seen by a doctor, who considered her, (Rose), to be insane.

-   The Magistrate discharged her.

She was then to be sent to an institution in Fulham.

I think it's her  ;D

I think you're right   ;D    ... good work PatLac.   :)

Whilst I was looking for her, possibly in 1939, something else cropped up in a newspaper report.  ::)

"Staffordshire Sentinel" - 26 July 1924
Headlines read >

"Woman's Theft From Hanley Shops"
" Described as a Professional Shoplifter"
           " Three Months' Imprisonment"
    ___________________________________

Just briefly ('cos I need to re-read article) >

At Hanley Police Court :

Rosina  STEVENTON ... of 104 Church Street, Bradmore. Wolverhampton

*  stated she was a single woman - aged about 40 years  (bc 1884)

*  she pleaded for leniency ... said for many years she had been housekeeper to a gentleman.
* * Edited to add >
*  The police had searched her home in Bradmore (on 24 July) and also found additonal property taken from other stores.
*  She stated that she wanted the (stolen) property to be returned ... "was awfully sorry" ... "and that she would see that she didn't get into trouble again."   * *

Charged on a number of counts for stealing ...   20 or so, hanks of silk / 14 yards of silk / shoes / 4 remnant pieces of silk / a bedspread  ... (and a good deal more.)
----------------

The above ^ is a later charge (1924), but at her sentencing in 1920 report said she had  "a previous conviction" (or at least an earlier charge against her).

     ~   Lu

Edited to add:   Further Court appearance (at London) 1930 -- in following post.

Could this be 'Rosina Zeamond'? Can someone with access to BNA check the article?

Local and General

Looks like her surname in article is > STEVENTON >  ... there is a hyphen after letter "n" ... and "ton" is on the following line.

Article ends in stating that she had a previous conviction for a similar offence :

Hi again Helen

Probably a silly question, but might Joseph have gone at a date later than 1934 ?   He was then only a very small child at that time.
And I know you said he was placed in his father's custody at about age three.

Could it be that another family member (> maybe from his father's side ?) accompanied him to China ... and then in 1939 his mother has travelled with him back to NZ ??

Hello Tim

Welcome to RootsChat.   :)

Because we are not permitted to add our contact details in these threads, the very best thing to do, is simply acknowledge this post >  just by adding an emoji (smiley face or whatever you wish).  Then repeat that ... and by doing this you will have "scored" the "three posts" necessary for newcomers to activate the Personal Messaging (PM) facility here.    That way, others can make contact with you.
