Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / can it be made clearer ?
« on: Thursday 14 July 05 10:20 BST (UK)  »
this is the only photo i have of my gt grandfather Thomas Dawson, he served in the boar war and the great war and at the age of 62 while serving in the merchant navy as a fireman on HMS Sitala, his shipwas sunk bu a uboat in 1940 and he was the only member of the crew who did not survive.

This is a copy of the original so i'm not sure if anything can be done to make the picture clearer, but would be very grateful for any help, and if anyone thinks they could date the photo that would be great.

much appreciated

Sorry for delay, my computer crashed on me.
Your gt gt uncle was  very young, just checked him out on the CWGC, I see he died at the 3rd battle of Ypres, better known
world wide as Passchendaele, i'll have a look out for his name the next time i visit the Menin gate at Ypres.
As you say, such a waste of a generation.

Just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me gather the info that enabled me to visit my gt uncle's grave in France, and being the first relative to pay my respects at his graveside since he died at Arras in 1918 was a special moment.

Arthur Warburton, 1898 - 1918

big thanks to everyone

Tara, this site may be very useful, www.1914-1918.net
although it deals mainly with the great war, ther are many experts on the Scots Regiment regarding the boer war.
