Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Re: Thorney Huguenots
« on: Monday 10 February 20 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Just googled looking for a copy of Trevor Bevis's The River Makers and found this thread.  I wondered if this link might help in your search for Flauhau.  There is an Abraham in Whittlesey which is where my Hairsigns settled after Thorney.

http://www.axholme-fhs.org.uk/files/settlers.pdf

This is a list of Wills of Settlers drawn up by Jo McCann on the Isle of Axholme Family history site

http://www.axholme-fhs.org.uk/

Also, in Bevis's book, The Persecuted, there are mention of Flauhau(t) baptisms at Thorney in 1657, 1695, to 1700 but no details

You can see the searchable transcripts of Thorney's French Church online on

https://archive.org/details/registerofbaptis17hugu/page/n11/mode/2up

However, the spelling of the surname needs to be accurate and I couldn't see mention of Flauhau(t) but put in Lisy and hundreds appear.  You might also wish to try the Canterbury records.

Hope this helps,
Sue

Europe / Re: Poland: Tekla Derz

Thank you for the link to the map and the website.

It makes interesting reading, especially as it specifically highlights the areas we know Tekla was living, in pre-war Poland.

We began to unravel her story when we noticed the name of the photographer who had taken one of the only two photogrpahs we have of her.

Both were taken in places you mention as being a high concentration for the name Derz.   An earlier one was taken in Gdynia and the later in Wejherowo, by W Engler about whom we have read enough to try and understand what was happening in the area at the time she was possibly living there.

Thank you again for your interest and assistance.
Kind regards.

Thank you very much for your reply and for the information.    Can you tell me where you found the Derz names?  Were they from an online phone book?  If so, how can I access this?

Europe / Re: Polish census 1921 & 1931

Quote from my previous message: I ask because I am desperately seeking a lady called Tekla Derz and her son (*) for whom I have miraculously found a birth certificate and wondered if the census might help me to locate them.   I'll keep looking!

Thank you again for your very kind attention and suggestions.  It is very much appreciated

Thank you for your concern re the above.  I should have specified when they were both born so that you would have realised they are both no longer living.  I believe that Tekla was born circa 1900 and her son born 1927, died in 1995.

Kind regards.

Thank you very much for your reply and the suggestion of the website which is very informative.

I too had searched on Google for details of the census and realise that it was too much to hope that information would be available on the internet.

However none of the sites I found tells me what information the census actually holds.  It seems to be purely demographic, similar to the  most recent British censuses which only give demographic information and conceal any personal information, post 1911.

I ask because I am desperately seeking a lady called Tekla Derz and her son (*) for whom I have miraculously found a birth certificate and wondered if the census might help me to locate them.   I'll keep looking!

Thank you again for your very kind attention and suggestions.  It is very much appreciated

Europe / Polish census 1921 & 1931
« on: Thursday 07 April 11 07:54 BST (UK)  »
I would really appreciate any information about the 1921 and 1931 censuses for Poland?  Were they purely demographic or did they contain personal details of individuals?  If personal, ie similar to the British Censuses with name, age, status, address and occupation, are these available to view / search?  I can't find very much information anywhere else.

Thank you

Europe / Poland: Tekla Derz
« on: Thursday 24 March 11 15:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have just received a birth certificate from Poland (after much searching) for my father Wladyslaw Derz born 19th Dec 1927 in Smolno, Puck, died in England in 1995.  His mother's name is given as Tekla Derz (maiden name Derz) and her address is given as Zelistrzewo, which is nearby.  If anyone can suggest where I can go from here, to find out more about Tekla and hopefully Wladyslaw's father, I would be really grateful.
We have always been led to believe that his father was Graf Willhelm August von Belau.
Kind regards.

Armed Forces / HM Service 1874
« on: Thursday 05 August 10 18:08 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace two men father and son both of whom served with HM Service according to the son's marriage record and wondered if anyone can tell me what might be meant by HM Service in 1874.

Edward Hope (Late Captain HM Service) married Phoebe Ann Popple in 1874 in Trinity Church Marylebone.  Their marriage records state that his father, James Hope, was a Colonel HM Service (Deceased).

Her father, George Popple, was a Master Bootmaker and judging by the places his children were born, (Chatham, Woolwich, Kent and Aldershot) wondered if this might be for the Armed forces.

Somewhere I picked up that Edward Hope might have been with the RMLI but can't now find the source!  This Hope family group do not appear on any censuses that I can see, and I wonder if perhaps they were overseas.

Phoebe remarried in 1879 and I did wonder if Edward had died between 1874-1879.  I have found an Edward Major Hope born 1841 son of John and Susannah Hope and who died in 1876 but can't find them on the censuses either.

Sorry, I'm feeling very frustrated by this ... all I am asking is if anyone has any idea what HM Service is or is it just a general term for Armed forces / Civilian work?
Thank you
Sue

Sussex / Sussex Militia 1811 for Charles THER
« on: Monday 12 October 09 06:40 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Charles THER born 1792 in Boxgrove, Sussex whose occupation, on his marriage records to Mary Charlotte BROOMHEAD on 15 December 1813, is given as Sussex Militia.

I wondered if anyone has access to the Sussex Muster Rolls for this period or, could suggest how else I might find out more about this man and his military career?

Charles died in 1845 in Ely Cambridgeshire and is buried at Holy Trinity.  He appears on the 1841 census as Charles SHEAR in Leigh, Kent an Excavator although family legend has it that he was an engineer working on the first railway tunnel.

I know that I already have more information than we can often find, but I feel there is more to know about this man!  Family legend also states that he may have been born to "royalty though on the 'wrong side of the blanket'".   Perhaps this is as exagerated as the engineer claim but I'd like to try and find out.
Thank you, Sue
