Suffolk / Charles Maitland BATLEY 1887-1941
« on: Friday 25 March 11 17:49 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for additional information on my second cousin Charles Maitland BATLEY.
He was born in the Dec 1887 quarter to Charles Arms Ledger Batley and Emma Pople. The 1891 census has him with his parents as Maitland BATLEY in Nayland With Wissington.  The 1901 census has him with his parents in Nayland With Wiston.  The 1911 census summary shows him living with his parents and sister in Sudbury district.

WW1 records would be nice - I can't find any.

He married Victoria Emily PYE in the Dec 1915 quarter in Ipswich.  Is there any way to get more details? A parish record perhaps?

He died in the June 1941 quarter in Ipswich. What cemetery? Any parish burial records?  Do newspapers from that era have obituaries?  He was a furniture restorer & carpenter according to his widow's death certificate.

Did he and Victoria ever have any children?

His widow Victoria Emily Pye Batley died age 100 on 27 Dec 1986. I have the death certificate. She died in Orwell nursing home, Vicarage Lane, Wherstead, Ipswich of cerebral hemorrhage. In attendance was her niece Fanny Augusta HOUSE (mother's maiden name PYE, b 1912, died 2005), who lived at 726 Foxhall Rd, Ipswich Suffolk, IP4 5TD

Were there any newspaper obituaries?  Where is Victoria Pye BATLEY buried?

Thank you,

Charles

Devon Lookup Requests / Elizabeth BUSTER b 1779 Tiverton/Bampton
« on: Sunday 13 February 11 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the family (parents, siblings) of my great-great grandmother Elizabeth BUSTER.  In the 1861 census she is 82 yo, listed as born in Tiverton, Devon.  In the 1871 census she is 92 yo, listed as born in Bampton, Devon.  She married Samuel ALVIS 3 Apr 1808 in Clevedon St Andrews (Somerset). She died in Tickenham age 101 on 4 Apr 1880.
In the 1841 census she is listed as born in Somerset, and is 60 yo. In the 1851 census she is 72 yo.
Baptism certificate would be great.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Congresbury parish lookup request BEACHAM
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 03:55 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for baptisms for all BEACHAMs in Congresbury 1740 to 1763, especially for William BEACHAM 1746-1748.  If you look for me can you tell me where the record was physically located (e.g. Taunton Record Office), what condition it was in (legibility) and how complete it seemed to be?

Thank you

Somerset Lookup Requests / Bedminster Union Poorhouse, Long Ashton
« on: Monday 12 January 09 01:12 GMT (UK)  »
many of my relatives were in the Bedminster Union Poorhouse in Long Ashton.  Is there a list somewhere of inmates, by date entering and leaving the poorhouse, & their ages & any other details?

(especially from ~1839-1870)

I can get some of this information indirectly through the censuses, and I've gone through the Long Ashton parish registers, which sometimes list baptisms and burials where it is obvious the people are from the poorhouse.

I'm aware of this site:
http://www.gertlushonline.co.uk/bedminster-workhouse.html

which lists a broken link: Bristol Orphanage Census 1851

at the end.

Jan 16 - I just became aware of this book ""Paupers in Workhouses 1861".  There are no Beachams in the 10% indexed sample, but does anyone have access to the whole book, for BEACHAM in Somerset or Gloucestershire?  Of course it would just be for 1861, but would be better than nothing.

Somerset Lookup Requests / marriage of Richard COURT ~ 1838
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 16:27 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find the maiden name of Ann, who married my relative Richard COURT. Richard was born around 1811 in Over Stowey, Somerset. In the 1841 census he is already married to Ann, and they have 2 children George 2 & John 1, born in Burnham & baptised 3 Mar 1839 & 7 Jun 1840.  I suspect that Richard & Ann married around 1838 therefore.  I can't find their marriage in either freeBMD or freeReg.  I find one marriage of a Richard Court to an Ann in Ledbury vol 26 p 284, but I don't think this is them because I think this is too far away.

In the 1841 census Ann is given as 30, born in 1811.
In the 1851 census she is 43, born in 1808 in Mark Somerset.
She is buried 11 March 1854, age given as 36 (born 1818), in Highbridge Burnham Somerset (BMD Axbridge 5c 443).

Thank you

Glamorganshire Completed Lookups / Re: CHEWINGS marriage in 1894
« on: Friday 07 November 08 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you.  I agree image is faint and page 1251 is probably page 1254.  Looking up 1881 & 1891 Wales census shows two Glamorgan Maggie Williams.  I believe I will buy BMD cert. to sort out these two.
(marriage date was 1894)
