Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / St. Michael le Belfry, York
« on: Friday 11 July 14 23:18 BST (UK)  »
I have found a marriage between Sarah Askam and John Brown dated 9th December 1811 in St Michael le Belfry in York. She was the sister of my ggg grandfather and the first sibling that I have found. I wondered if anyone had any more information on this marriage such as a witness name or (pushing it) a father's name?
Thank you for any help.

Hi Wendy,

Thank you for sending me all that information. Funny, but when the digest arrived this morning, there wasn't anything from you.

I think that I have to accept that the captain of the Oswy was Daniel Fairburn as a lot of sailings took place after I think Robert died.

The Lloyds' register of captains doesn't show him at all! So that's disappointing.

Adi, on the list found a Captain Robert Fairburn in London in 1835, but I have no idea if he was ever in that part of the world.

It's interesting that Daniel named his only son, John, when his father was also a Daniel, and his wife's father was Ralf. I believe Robert Fairburn had a brother and also their father was named John.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Wendy,

Yes, you sent me the apprenticeship record referring to Daniel Fairburn -  I thought it was probably you.
I haven't received what else you sent to Mariners as I receive it in digest and so it will arrive in the morning.

I have started to look at Daniel and it seems he was from Sutton. Robert Fairburn's wife was also from there, but I hadn't really thought that he (Robert) was also. I'll have to do a bit more digging over the weekend.
I have seen him in the 1861 and the mate was also a Fairburn.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Wendy,

Thank you for the replies. I haven't looked at burials at sea because his widow, in the 1851 census, described herself as the "widow of a retired mariner", which suggested he died on land.
I will definitely try contacting the Cemeteries department.
Thank you and best wishes,

Hi Joyce,

Thank you so much for offering to help me. My main interest is Henry Coltman, but he moved away from Sigglesthorne and his children were baptised in other parishes. If there is anything concerning his parents and sibblings, I would really like to have it.
No rush - I think family history is that sort of hobby! I think it must be very interesting to see the actual parish records.

Thank you and best wishes,
Belen

Hello Joyce,

Thank you for your reply. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you, but I have been away.

I would be grateful with some help with my COLTMAN family. I have some births and marriages from the IGI but would like to know if their is any other information, such as witnesses at marriages, deaths, or if there is anybody I have missed.

This is the Sigglesthorne information that I have.

Elizabeth Coltman m. Thomas Dennis 6/3/1742. I don't know if she was also baptised there as the IGI doesn't go back that far.

Also (her brother?) John Coltman m. Sarah Beadall 3/12/1737.

I have 4 children for John and Sarah.
Francis Coltman b. 3/2/1739
Henry (Harry) Coltman b. 26/6/1743
Ann Coltman b. 30/3/1746   (Ann Coltman m. John Snow 28/8/1769)
John Coltman b 27/8/1748

Any more information would be much appreciated.
Thank you and best wishes,
Belen

Hi,

I wondered if there were any COLTMANs buried at St John and St Martin's in Beverley. I believe Joseph COLTMAN, a head curate at the minster was buried there in 1837. Are there any others?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,

I have been searching for information on Captain Robert FAIRBURN (sometimes FAIRBAIRN or FAIRBOURN) without much luck.

I wondered if anyone has the MIs for Hull or Sutton and could tell me when or where he was buried. I know that his last child was born in 1819 in Hull and that in a marriage announcement in the Hull Packeton of another daughter at the end of December 1835, he was described as the late Robert Fairburn.

He was possibly the Robert Fairbairn baptised in Hull Unitarian church in 1780.

I would be grateful for any help as I cannot find out anything about him.

Hi,

Thank you to Plain Bob, Trish 1120, Gogogadgetlegs and Clivealbert for your replies even though it is many years after my original post.  I never received an e-mail to say that their were recent messages, perhaps because of the time lag. So, it was a surprise to find this follow up, by accident, today.

Harriet Askam was at "school" in Derbyshire in the 1851 census, possibly sent there as her parents had died in 1848 and 1849 respectively. She married Henry Rivett (a hosier) and they had a son Henry Charles Hatfield Rivett in 1861 who moved to the U.S. after his parents died young in 1869 and 1876. Harriet, her sister, Elizabeth Fairburn Askam and her brother John Fairburn Askam, all married in 1854. The other brother, Robert had moved to Victoria, Australia.

As Plain Bob, I was not aware of a way to exchange e-mail addresses, but would be happy to share information. I have already shared a great deal of information and newspaper copies with someone called Ruth who must fit somewhere in your family.

Best wishes,
Belen
