Dumfriesshire / Re: Wintruphead

Kathgill,
I suggest that you might consider that Wintruphead might represent the farmhouse of Winterhopehead in the parish of Middlebie.  The map reference is NY 273823.  Perhaps you have some further clues.

Dumfriesshire / Re: Rigg Eng, Canonbie is there such a place?
« on: Thursday 21 May 09 09:11 BST (UK)  »
The Rigg-Eng almost certainly refers to England, and was the address of Walter Armstrong who had a son, Walter, on 21/10/171759.  The same Walter is also recorded in the Canonbie Old Parish Record as having another son (no name) at Rigdykenook-Eng on 7/12/1761.  This is very likely to be the same place.
It was very common for births and baptisms from the Cumberland side of the Border to be recorded in Canonbie, especially those from Riddings and Kirkandrews-on-Esk.

Dumfriesshire / Re: Help finding Bogra (farm?) near Cannonbie

I would add that James Elliot and Isabel Broach had a daughter, Janet,  in Bogra the date given in the Old Parish Records of Canonbie being 2/8/1801.  No other offspring are recorded.

Dumfriesshire / Re: Crawthwaite location

Hello Bob,
Could it be Crawthat that you are looking for?  If so it is in Dumfriesshire on the B7068 road which runs from Lockerbie to Langholm.  The nearest village is Waterbeck and the map reference is NY251823.  I hope that is of some help.

Dumfriesshire / Re: Greenfield, Kirkpatrick Fleming
« on: Monday 14 January 08 17:15 GMT (UK)  »
According to the Valuation rolls Greenfield House in the parish of Kirkpatrick Fleming was tenanted until 1922 by Elizabeth Davidson described as a widow.  The subsequent years of the 1920s showed the tenant to be George Davidson (probably a relative of the aforesaid widow).  The office and other property described as part of Greenfield was tenanted throughout the period by the gamekeeper, James Noon.

I hope that this is the information that you require.

References supplied by me came from Canonbie OPR microfilm.  The date column in the early volumes are seriously stained and possibly slightly out of focus, although the originals clearly are interpretable.
I checked the twins, John and Jean, born in 1703.  This entry escaped full indexation by me by virtue of uncertainty about the mother's surname, but was entered elsewhere in my index.

Hello Bob,

Canonbie OPR shows two births attributed to John Armstrong and Jean Lamb.  The precise dates are not recorded but the year is 1698 for the birth of Arthur and 1670 for William.  There are no other births mentioned.

Just to add a detail to the list of offspring of John Armstrong and Grizel Scott recorded by Gadget; all the births were recorded at Harelawhill in the Parish of Canonbie according to the OPR.

Dumfriesshire / Re: Brownmoor Sawmill Dumfriessire
« on: Wednesday 17 October 07 20:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello Stewart,
Brownmoor Wood is situated half a mile south of Ecclefechan and west of the M74.  The adjacent sawmill belongs to Carruthers Timber and is at Mein Bridge, Ecclefechan.  It is still in operation.
I hope that helps.
