Good to see this McGougan/Guigan thread revived! I'm going to refresh my memory/research to see if I can add any more info.

Lanarkshire / Burns Home, Partick

Hi folks, I've just found a relative, Duncan McGuigan, listed as living at Burns Home, 83 Douglas Street, Partick, Glasgow on the 1901 Census.
He's listed as a Boarder along with lots of other men, all working.
I just wondered if anyone had heard of Burns Home, or can I assume it was just a big lodging house for men. Thanks

Hi Daveyboy, thanks for that. I'm think the Reids who came from the William Reid/Mary Lavery marriage stayed around Anderston, I don't know of any who lived Kilbarchan way.

Re the original puzzle of John Lavery disappearing to Australia. I found details of his marriage to a Margaret Merrow in NSW, 1882, and the deaths of 2 of their children in 1885. I've ordered transcriptions of all the certificates to finally confirm whether this is the same John who left Ann in Glasgow around 1870. Hopefully the marriage cert should name both their sets of parents.
If it doesn't, then I'm back to the drawing board trying to find John and where and when he died.

Can't wait for my trip to the Mitchell on August 12th!!

Argyllshire / McGougan/McGugan family Lochgilphead

I'm trying to find census entries from 1841 onwards to track the whereabouts of the McGougan/McGugan family of Lochgilphead or North Knapdale but despite spending a fortune on SP, I've had no success.
Details I did find - Archibald Mcgugan marries Flora/Flory Mclean. I've located their children from the OPR -
1817 Donald
1820 Archibald
1824 John
1826 Malcolm
That would make the sons, approx, 24, 21,17 and 15 on the 1841 Census, and I can find nothing to match, nor John Senior and Flora/Flory, searching both spellings of the surname, which seems to be interchangeable. Nor can I find anything for 1851.
I've located young John's marriage to Ann/Agnes Leitch in 1854 and have had no problems with following his line.
Any help on finding the other members of his family would be gratefully appreciated!

Hi Jenn and Trish,
John disappears from Scottish records after the birth of his last child with Ann in 1869. Ann calls herself a widow on the 1871 census, and dies in Barnhill Poorhouse in 1872.
So I'm guessing John left sometime after 1869. On the IGL there is a child birth,1874, in New Zealand,  the John who dies with his brother in Dec 1885. The other children's births are listed on the NSW register.
I'm thinking John might have been a convict, but would he have been sent to NZ? Or maybe the IGL is wrong about little John's birthplace.
I'm hoping someone might offer to look up the details when they visit the NSW registry, or if this is this not an option, I'll get the transcription service to do it.

Thanks Trish for all the links. I've found the NSW site and it's very useful, and the variations in spelling Lavery hadn't occurred to me.

John seems to have been a bit of a lad, not content with one poor wife and starving bairns in Glasgow, he gets himself another one and several more babies, born in quick succession. The deaths of the 2 boys on the same day let my imagination run wild - maybe they'd to make room for the next arrival...
I'll know once I get to read their cause of death.

Well, having had 3 children with Margaret before Alice, and leaving several kids behind in Glasgow, it's nice to think that John did one "honourable" thing in his life!

Hi Folks, many thanks for the interest and information.
Can I ask, Trish, where you found the marriage certificate? I haven't been able to locate it.
I'd love to find out what happened to the boys in 1885. Is it possible to ask someone to look up the certificates for me when they visit the NSW Registrar?
Thanks again
