Armed Forces / 47th Foot - How do I find more information of relation?
« on: Saturday 22 August 09 20:57 BST (UK)  »
I've been given information that my Great, Great Grandfather (William Newton) was serving with the 47th Foot in 1861. He was born in Shepton Mallet and I'm trying to find out how I can confirm this information and possibly gain more?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Wow - many thanks to you both. I've sent them to my mum and she's thrilled with them both. I didn't realise that my search for the cap badge ID would result in these lovely pictures.  :)

Does anyone know - is it possible for me to re-scan the picture, and focus on the cap badge. My knowledge of this kind of thing is non-existant.

The ring could be significant - we have no knowledge of it after his wedding! I'm curious to see if it's possible to see any sort of emblem on it. When he married my Great-Grandmother his family weren't too pleased and the history from his side of the family is sketchy to say the least.

Hi,

Would anyone be willing to tidy up a picture of my great-grandparents? I'm trying to ID my great-grandfathers regiment from his cap badge. Also, and I know this is a long shot, but if the signet ring on his finger could be made any clearer...that would be amazing!

Thanks in advance,

Sam

Hi - thanks for the info so far. His name was Harry Sidney Stride - I have another photo of him in uniform (but with no badges etc) and it was taken in Winchester. I've attached it.

The wedding picture would be from 1917. I also know that my great-grandparents met in Ipswich...and Harry was in uniform at the time. Not entirely sure what year they met though.

There's another photo, which I don't have with me unfortunately, that shows him on the back of a motorcycle - don't know if that helps with anything but thought I'd mention it!

I'll also post the second picture in the photo restoration thread - thank you!

Hi,

Can anyone offer any assistance in identifying my Great-Grandfathers regiment? I'm including two pictures - one is from his wedding day and the other shows him somewhere in the field. We have no idea if this was in England or overseas - any possible comment on that would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance!
