Canada Lookup Request / Re: JOHN LOWERY HANNA
« on: Saturday 22 April 17 22:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Just found this post.  John Lowry Hanna was my father-in-law's maternal grandfather.  Just wondering if you managed to find any more info?

I've also sent a PM, but replying here too, to hopefully cover all bases...

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / Re: Mount Pleasant Inn, Broughton(Moss?)
« on: Saturday 12 December 09 23:35 GMT (UK)  »
Just checking that you're definitely not talking about the Mount Pleasant Inn in Llay?  Only if you are we share a common interest as my GGGrandfather, Benjamin Jones, was the Inn keeper of the Llay pub in 1891!

Looking at the Llay pub on Google Earth, the bus stop in front is described as 'Burton, Mount Pleasant Inn' but not entirely sure what that means (could it just be the route that particular bus takes?)

Anyway thought I'd mention it on the off chance we were talking about the same place.

Europe / Re: Polish / Romany

Albina was born at 5 Bracey Street, Islington on 25 August 1914.  Herbert was a Newsagents Assistant.

The only sibling I'm aware of is a 'Lawrie' (could be Lawrence) but not tracked him down yet.

Regarding Herbert & Julia's deaths, I haven't traced those, but as far as I'm aware they lived in North London area.

I have found Albina's death in Harlow in 2002, and her marriage certificate, etc, but just can't pin down her parents.

Europe / Polish / Romany
« on: Friday 27 June 08 16:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace the family tree of a friend and am having trouble with one of the branches.

As far as she remembers it, her maternal grandmother's parents were Polish.  She thinks she remembers them speaking with an accent and talking about 'back home', although she would have been quite young at the time.

I have the birth certificate for her grandmother, Albina Moore (born 1914), and her parents are shown as Herbert Moore and Julia Victoria Moore, formerly Bush.  Not very Polish sounding names!  I can't find any marriages for Herbert and Julia and believe me I have tried every combination I can think of.

My friend says that it is possible that these Polish ancestors were Romany and that there was a change of name somewhere, but thinks that this was to cover up a change of religion, rather than country.

Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can do next?  Herbert Moore is too common a name to narrow down.  I've found a Julia Victoria E Bush born in 1882 in Pancras and she apppears on the 1901 census as a servant in Walthamstow, but thats about as much as I have found. Without any marriage cert I'm not sure how much more I can do.

If they were Polish Romany would they even appear on censuses?

Thanks for that! Very useful.  There was a useful link to a TNA page too which I'm going to have a read through now.

What did this mean in practice?

I've just found this article from a newspaper in November 1860.  The highlighted chap, William Estwick, was my 3xgreat grandfather.  Just wondered what he actually would have had to do in this case - would he have had to put up any kind of financial backing or is it the equivalent of when a company calls in the administrators today?

If you click on 'cached' from Google you're just seeing the page when Google last cached (saved) it.  Searching won't work as the site still no longer exists :(  All you will be able to see is literally that cached page, the links won't work.

I'm hoping it will reappear somewhere soon.  Its been publicised in a couple of family history mags recently, I'd not heard of it before so was just going to have a look.  It appears from the message that comes up at the top of the page that it has expired (i.e whoever owns it has not paid the subscription going forward).

Oooh, thank you :)

Aaah, so it is an Artillery badge?  We (me and mum) just found a badge that looked like it might be that, so was hoping someone would confirm!

Think you misunderstood the 'Laver' bit - thats the name of the photographer not (I assume, anyway) the name of the person in the picture.

Just need to work out how I can work out who the people are!

We've always been led to believe that the woman is Ellen Hancock, b. 1886 in Poplar.  I've found a marriage in 1911 in Poplar of an Ellen Hancock, to either a Claud S Cadel or a John W Pett.  I can't find any births of Pett/Hancock children, but there are some Cadel/Hancock ones (2 of which are in Croydon, which is near Thornton Heath).  However, I can't find any military records on Ancestry of a Claud Cadel.

Actually, another question on the photo.  I know we probably can't say for the baby in the christening dress, but any ideas if the other child is a boy or a girl?  I think facially it looks like a boy but my mum thinks its girls clothes, but I'm not sure for that era.  The two Cadel children in Croydon are boys.
