Kent / Re: Help please to find David Church
« on: Thursday 29 April 10 15:34 BST (UK)  »
Thank you all so much for your help and information.  It's such a long time since I originally posted the question.
Although I had found David Church's burial notice - his baptism and marriage to Sarah Webster still elude me.
His daughter, Sarah Ann Church was my great grandmother.  She married Thomas Edgeler, and had 12 children. My grandmother, Eliza Ann Edgeler, was the youngest.  She married John Thomas WEBSTER (a different branch of the Websters).

JOHN, Lord of Kent, I'll send you my email addy in a private message - and we can swap details.  I have a photo of Slaves' Alley, where the Churchs, Washer, Websters and Edgelers all lived - at the bottom of a chalk pit owned by Col.Gladdish (used to be the Overcliffe).

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Payne/Hayward marriage 1888
« on: Wednesday 03 December 08 18:38 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone help please with a look-up for my grandparent's marriage in Wandsworth in the second quarter of 1888.  His name was John Payne and her's Charlotte Eliza Hayward.
There seem to be a few John Paynes born in Milton, Kent, within a few months of each other, so it would be nice to get his father's name to save going up the wrong line ::)
Thanks in advance to all.

Wow, you guys have certainly been busy this morning - anything to do with those cold wintry showers outside, perhaps?
They are all amazing, thank you.  I don't know how you do it, but am very grateful that you can ... and do.
They will all be emailed to my new cousin, and I thank you on her behalf too.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photo of aunt for restoration please
« on: Tuesday 02 December 08 08:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
Can anyone weave some magic on this photo of my aunt which is terribly over-exposed.  Excited about this one, 'cos I've just found a new cousin and her family, who have emailed me this photo I've never seen before.

That's them Casalguidi - Brilliant, thank you.
Denton is a little 'sub-parish' of Milton - I was born and brought up there.  Looking at the age of John - 10 in the 1901 Census, it's possible that my grandmother Charlotte was in the Workhouse giving or about to give birth, since it was used as a lying-in hospital.

Hi Kerry
Thanks so much for your quick response.
My grandmother seems to have alternated her children's births between Wandsworth and Gravesend. i.e.
William Payne, 12, b.Putney
John, 10, b.Gravesend
Charles, 8, b.Wandsworth
May3, b. Gravesend
Alice, 1, b.Wandsworth
At least, that's how they are recorded in the 1901 Census.
Grandmother's name was Charlotte Eliza Hayward.

I would be most grateful for any help in finding my grandparents in the 1891 Census - have tried every which way to no avail :-\

They got married in 1888 in Wandsworth - John Payne to Charlotte Eliza Haywarc.

In 1901, they were living at Crooked Lane, Milton, Gravesend, with their children
William 12, John 10, Charles 8, May 3, and Alice 1.  Another child, Albert 6, was living with his grandparents in Wandsworth.

Also in the 1841 Census are William's parents and siblings, living in Deptford.
Grove Lane, ecc.St.Paul, Deptford, Greenwich, Kent

Alexander Johnston, 55, Labourer, b.Scotland
Ann Johnston, 55, b.Kent
Elizabeth, 20, b.Kent
Georgiana, 15, b.Kent
Susannah, 13, b.Kent
Amelia, 11, b.Kent.

That makes Alexander b. around 1786, and it looks as if William was the only son.
Finally discovered some Scottish blood in the family history!

Thanks so much Ian - that's definitely them!  The occupation of Fisherman and the age of Sarah, the child, are spot on,
I was looking at 'Johnson' last night, and did find another William in Gravesend, but things didn't gel.
