Thank you all for your replies thus far, food for thought and some interesting points - I am now going to try and upload a picture of the plaque, though I think it may be too small to view :-[ I have tried to edit it to no avail

Thank you for your time thus far, you're a lovely bunch xx

The 2nd VB of the LNLR did not go to South Africa as a unit. Its members volunteered for service with other units. I cannot find him on the LNLR medal roll so he probably served with another regiment. G8079 may be his company and number for the 2nd VB, so he would have been given a different number for South Africa.

The easiest thing to do is to look on Findmypast as they may have created a new set of papers for him. If you do not have access to FindMyPast you should post details of his place of birth, age etc so others can confirm they have the right man.

Can you post details (or a photograph) of the plaque so we can see the other men listed. You can also look in the local newspapers as I am sure details of men volunteering would have been included.

Ken

Paul, thank you for the link, I've bookmarked it to go through :)

Ken. On FindMyPast I put in his name and the G8079 number and it just gave me a ref to WO127 at the National Archives, nothing else.  I do have a photo of the plaque - I shall try and scan it in, but it might get tomorrow before I can have access to a scanner. The local newspapers is a good idea (hadn't thought of that...d'oh!). But I will do a scan!

His details were as per my first post. William Dwyer G8079 Corp. He was born in Kildare, Ireland in 1860ish and lived at the time of this conflict either at 5 Hemfield Street, Ince, Wigan or 10 Hall Street, Ince Wigan.

Thank you all for your time and help thus far.

Armed Forces / Boer War Records?

Hello  :)

I was at my local history society in Hindley near Wigan this morning, they have a museum exhibition up at the moment and I discovered a Boer War plaque put up to commemorate the soldiers who returned from fighting unscathed.

I believe I may have found the name of my Great Great Grandfather on there.  But I am unsure as to what is out there regarding Boer War records (if indeed there are any at all...)

His name is listed as W Dwyer (Corp) G8079 and the plaque belongs to the Loyal Northern Lancashire Regiment, 2nd Volunteer Batallion.

Is there anything that can be done with this info at all - any people I can contact or organisations that can help or websites?

Here's hoping!

Best wishes and thank you for reading

Hello again!

My friend says the Lennard is used on the birth certificate - but nowhere else...although I'm going to ask her to double check again just to be sure!

I've been searching the 1891 census in Cumberland but as yet no joy, and I wish to thank you for taking the time and trouble for also searching the census too.

It's a tangled web alright...

Thank you for your time and care thus far

Thank you again for your kind reply!

Well, now - I spoke to my friend again last night - she said Christina was baptised as Christina Lennard Copland - she says no-one else in the family has the name Lennard so is wondering if that is after her real father? Other than that she has no idea what he may have been called only that Jane was reputed to have been whoever the father was' servant! But I might be onto something with the Lennard...

Thanks for your help thus far - very much appreciated x

Hi Monica

I know - the dates do seem a bit tight don't they? The child's birth certificate states her as illegitimate and born in 1887.  But my friend seems convinced there was a marriage at some point.  My friend has had no luck finding her on any census other than the 1901...

All she has to go off is that her Grandmother told her they were married and it was anulled - because his family found out and didn't want him to be associated with a servant girl (but it's all hearsay I guess isn't it?)

My friend mentioned marriage of declaration and wondered if that might have happened, but isn't sure.  I don't know whether that's a possibility.

Would there be Bastardy Bonds one could look for to see if that shed any light?

Thank you for your swift reply - very much appreciated

Aberdeenshire / Copland - Aberdeenshire
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 17:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everyone

I am posting on behalf of a dear friend of mine who needs some help with her Scottish ancestry and I am struggling to help her!

My friend's Great Grandmother was called Jane Lamond Copland born 1860, daughter of John Copland and Mary Davidson.

She went into service at a young age and on the 1881 census she is shown as a kitchen maid at Crosscanonby, Cumberland.  She gave birth to an illegitimate daughter in 1887 in Peterculter, Aberdeenshire called Christina. Jane was the servant of the man who fathered the child and my friend believes Jane married him in secret - but cannot find a marriage record for it and the father is not named on Christina's birth certificate.  Allegedly the family found out and made them annull the marriage - but neither myself or my friend know whether that would be a realistic possibility? My friend thinks they may have had a 'Marriage by Declaration' again isn't sure though...

In 1888 Jane remarried to a  John Milne and they had a son John - they are shown living together on the 1901 Scottish census, with Christina named as Cissie Milne.

Any help or opinions would be gratefully received by both of us.

Thank you for taking the time to read

Best wishes

Kildare / Re: Hynan - Kilmeage, Kildare

Hello there

A good place to start looking for birth/marriage/death records in Ireland is http://www.rootsireland.ie/ and more particularly for you as you're starting in Kildare, here http://kildare.rootsireland.ie/ . I've been using the site for a while, beware that you do have to pay to get the  more detailed information you find in searches, so you must be sure you're right before you commit otherwise it can end up being quite expensive.

Good luck - I've been doing research in Kildare for a good few years now - it's been hit and miss with that site but always a good starting place.

Also, if you look at the top of this Kildare message board there are useful links to other sites and genealogical resources for this county!

Best of luck!
