Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Re: Tunnicliffe/Gotheridge
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 17:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello BigTb, The reason why I have assumed that the Elizabeths' marriage you are seeking is the person born in 1875 and not 1877, despite what is written on any certificates is that she is aged 6, 16, 25 and 34yrs in the respective censuses. Arthurs death reg. in Basford dist seems to be 1948 aged 72yrs and Elizabeth's in 1932 in Basford dist is aged 57yrs and not 55yrs. Obviously there is a lot of assuming here but the Elizabeth living with her Grandparent's in 1881 is stated as being 3yrs old and is the  daughter of Harriet Gotheridge (b.1860) she being baptised Dec 23rd 1877 in Church Broughton. Of course I may have assumed incorrectly. What happened to her mother Harriet ? As stated, there is no apparent marriage registration recorded, at least not in England or Wales. Regards.

Tricky one this but with the multitude of misspellings and mistranscriptions amongst both families I wouldn't be suprised if they were  married around 1895, when Arthur and Elizabeth were both about 18yrs old and it has been temporarily lost in transcription :). Assuming that your Elizabeth Gotheridge (Born Jun Qr 1875)was the daughter of William Gotheridge and Elizabeth Derbyshire  and NOT the illegitimate daughter (Born 1877)of Harriet Gotheridge, also of Church Broughton. Judging by the death registration of Elizabeth, in the Basford Dist 1932, I'd go for the former.

Judging by the other entries on the page for "Wid" I'd say she is widowed in 1891.

It is interesting that Moore St and Depot St are still there, though Ambrose St which ran parallel to Moore St, was demolished in the late 1960's. I still miss the aroma from Offiler's brewery which stood on Ambrose St :)  The Brewery site was formerly an Ordnance Depot (c1808) and then the Silk Throwsters (1820's)   and then  the Star Tea Company. Incidently, Brewer George Offiler's (born in Old Basford ,Nottm ) mother was named Newton Morley.

Derbyshire / Re: John Thompson Ltd-Hudson House Kingsway
« on: Tuesday 18 November 08 01:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Dolly, Kingsway and Queensway  in Derby were only opened as brand new roads in the early 1930's by King George V and Queen Mary. Prior to that there was little there other than the Borough Asylum built in the 1880's . Kingsway was a new name to Derby. The retail park was built on old railway land and the shopping centre on a refuse tip, previously a brickyard. Regards, Cecil.
