Thanks for that Brian and it's very near to Kirk Smeaton where Edward's son John says he was born, according to the 1851 census for Burn.  That Norton didn't show in my road atlas gazetteer.

Thankyou all.  After looking at modern and Victorian ordnance survey maps and taking into consideration all your views I think it's Carlton near Pontefract as the Pontefract part would run into the blind, deaf, dumb column so the enumerator has shortened it.
The baptism mentioned by Suz looks likely as the date fits and Edward, Benjamin and Elizabeth are recurring names in the family.
What was confusing though was a Carlton just north of Snaith which is only a couple of miles away from Gowdall.  Then Norton crops up in 1861, but the only Norton I could find was near Malton.  I did try to find a Norton near to Carlton near Pontefract and Carlton near Snaith but I couldn't; so that's still a puzzle.  So once again, thankyou.

Anyone know where Carlton something or other is?
The 1851 census for Gowdall has my ggg grandfather Edward Rhodes, widower, age 72, agricultural labourer, born at Carlton ---- can't make the rest of it out.
His two sons,George and Benjamin and daughter Susan are with him.
The ref is HO 107  2350 and 439 in the top right corner.

Hello Lee,
The booklet is just for St Peter's baptisms Kirk Smeaton 1754 to 1902 but I notice in some of the entries under "Abode" it mentions Little Smeaton Parish of Womersley so it could be that the incumbent at Womersley copied the entry from St Peter's into his register as it was part of his parish, albeit 19 days later.
Yes, Mary seems to fit the bill too, so now I'll have to look for the family in the 1841 census, with Mary about 34 and Martha about 33, although I realise that dates of birth and dates of baptisms can be years apart and the girls could well be married then with different surnames.  I might need some more help.
   Regards, Rapsy.

Hello Dobfarm and Lee,
Apologies once more for the delay in replying but again the computer has been out of action for about a week .
I know that Womersley is only about a mile or so from Little Smeaton but why would Martha be baptised again at Womersley? Surely, once you're baptised you're baptised.
   Regards, Rapsy.

Hello dobfarm,
The booklet arrived yesterday from The Pontefract & District Family History Society.  It has just one baptism for Rhodes.
Martha, 10th Dec 1808, father Edward, mother Elizabeth, living at Little Smeaton.  I'm willing to believe that John was from Church Smeaton and that Martha was his sister.
The year 1808 links nicely with John's estimated birth year and your suggestion of a baptism at Pontefract in 1805, father Edward, mother Elizabeth.
  Many thanks, Rapsy.

Many thanks for this info dobfarm.
Sorry for the delay in answering, but the computer has been switched off for a couple of days.  I don't think that John would have left a will being an ag lab, but I'll give the booklet a go.
 Thanks again, Rapsy.

Does anyone have access to church records for Kirk Smeaton c 1808?

I'm trying to find a birth or baptism for my great great grandfather John Rhodes.

I know that his father was Edward as he married twice and I have the marriage certificate, 1845, at Brayton near Selby, to Hannah Claburn.

John is at Burn in 1841 age 30 with his first wife Maria (Clayton).  The 1851 census shows him at Burn with his second wife Hannah.  He's 43 and an agricultural labourer born at Church Smeaton.

   He died at Burn, 17-3-1864.

       Regards, Rapsy.
