Thankyou all. After looking at modern and Victorian ordnance survey maps and taking into consideration all your views I think it's Carlton near Pontefract as the Pontefract part would run into the blind, deaf, dumb column so the enumerator has shortened it.
The baptism mentioned by Suz looks likely as the date fits and Edward, Benjamin and Elizabeth are recurring names in the family.
What was confusing though was a Carlton just north of Snaith which is only a couple of miles away from Gowdall. Then Norton crops up in 1861, but the only Norton I could find was near Malton. I did try to find a Norton near to Carlton near Pontefract and Carlton near Snaith but I couldn't; so that's still a puzzle. So once again, thankyou.
