Other Countries / Re: India: BMD records for local people
« on: Friday 07 October 22 16:29 BST (UK)  »
2022: I'm bumping this thread as I'm still looking for information about English women who married Indian men in London during the 1850s and I've had no luck finding anything else out since my original post. Does anyone know if there are any Indian records online? Or of an archives I could approach to find out more and Emma, her husband Mohammat/Mohammed and their two daughters?

London and Middlesex / Re: Location of laundry in 1920s (?) London

As is always the way, my next search finds it! If anyone is interested i searched the newspaper archive and found an advert for the laundry at 9 Tryon Street, Chelsea. Part of the building is still there but it's much changed.

London and Middlesex / Location of laundry in 1920s (?) London
« on: Tuesday 06 July 21 15:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a copy of a photo of my 2xgreat grandmother and her colleagues standing outside the laundry where they worked, going by their hairstyles it looks like it was taken in the late 1910s or 1920s but possibly early 1930s. The name of the laundry is 'Mrs Pain - Laundry Specialists' and the photo shows the ladies standing outside what looks like a shop type laundry rather than an industrial laundry, with a number '9' above the doorway.

My 2x great grandmother lived in Fulham but I'd like to find the location of the laundry, I'm assuming it's in Fulham or a surrounding area. Can anyone help me to locate 'Mrs Pain - Laundry Specialists'?

Something I love from the photo is that there's a sign in the window saying 'party frocks are washed in 12 hours'.

Many thanks.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Newbury 1817 baptism lookup please
« on: Wednesday 13 May 20 20:15 BST (UK)  »
Thanks, Pennines but I don't think that's the person I'm after. The baptisms from St Nicholas' Church in Newbury during the 1810s don't seem to be online anywhere and that's where I'd like a look-up.

In the online Berkshire Baptism Index I did find a baptism for a Charles Willis in 1821 in Reading where it states he was born in 1814, but I don't think this my Charles either.

From the 1841 and 1851 census records, Charles Willis was a tailor. Also in Newbury of similar ages were George and James Willis (born in the 1810s), both were also tailors. George's second marriage is in the Berkshire Marriage Index on FindMyPast, and his father was named as Samuel. There is a Lucy Wallis who is old enough to be their mother who is given as a widowed tailoress in census. So, my hunch is that Charles may be the son of Samuel and Lucy. The baptism records for George and James are also not in the Berkshire Baptism Index.

Charles did name one of his sons Frederick Samuel, his third son and the eldest one by his second wife.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Newbury 1817 baptism lookup please

Hi all,

If anyone has access to the Newbury baptism records from the 1810s can you please do a lookup for me - for some reason none of these are in the Berkshire Baptism Index on FindMyPast (which is frustrating).

I'm looking for a Charles Willis born about 1817. I'm suspecting his parents were Samuel and Lucy Willis but I'd like confirmation of who they were, plus Samuel's occupation. Also, if anyone has time, can you please let me know of any siblings of Charles.

Many thanks in advance.

Armed Forces / Re: Merchant Navy CR10 - 'renewal' query

Hi Paula,
Certainly a difficult task as the key is trying to find common identifying information within the available records. A name like William Smith [no middle name] from London means looking for a needle in a haystack. There is one contender and I stress it is one you should rule out via further research rather than rule in at this stage. William Smith b. 1894, London. Dis.A 1135637. Your ancester noted on CR 10 as Greaser but the guy with Dis. A 1135637 noted as a Trimmer both were engine-room ratings and used interchangeably.

Do you have any further id information on him? Did he serve in the wars as a seaman?
Regards
Hugh

Hi,

He did serve in the Royal Navy from 1912 to at least 1920 where he was a stoker 1st class, his service number was K.15207. I've found his service record and also an entry in the National Roll (Section II London) however I'm suspecting his NR entry isn't exactly true of his whereabouts during WW1 - it would be good to get an experienced opinion on that. His address given in NR entry (33 Halford Road, Fulham) is where his sister was living so I'm certain it's for the same WS.

Hello,
The CR10 card was introduced in 1918 with a new ID and service book (RS2) with the new ID number as the numerical identifier. Sometimes a Dis.A is shown if the seaman was already in posession of a DB. The CR2 card recorded foreign voyages and was identified by Dis.A number.
Can you give a date and place of birth so I can put another pair of eyes on it?
Regards
Hugh

Hi Hugh,

His name was William Smith, born 3rd April 1894 in London.

Armed Forces / Merchant Navy CR10 - 'renewal' query
« on: Sunday 08 March 20 22:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've found the CR10 record for an ancestor of mine. His record has an entry for his 'No. of Identity Certificate' (497388), some personal details including his DOB, a photo, and written on the side of the document is 'renewal'.  As his name was 'William Smith' his name is too common. I haven't found anything in the CR2 series which could be a match as only year of birth seems to be given and no identity certificate number. His CR10 doesn't list any ship ID's.

My question is, presumably the 'renewal' means he was staying on in the MN - can anyone confirm this? Also, is there a way to match up CR10 and CR2 records if I don't have a discharge number?

Thanks in advance.

Hi ShaunJ,

Thanks for the link, that's a very useful resource. Unfortunately, even though my ancestor was born before 1901 he doesn't seem to be on the 8 spreadsheets.
