Just my humble opinion but I think `strain` is what we would call `stress` today. My Mum used to describe  someone as having been through a period of strain or is feeling strained.

An ancestor of mine had 2 children before she married the father and they were baptised in her name but changed their name to their fathers when the parents married a few years later.

Thats ok Nick, it really divided the community and makes fascinating reading especially as the curates father remained the vicar of the parish so things were not good between father and son.

I have come across this happening in the village where my ancestors lived in the 19 century when the Church of England curate in the parish left to found a Moravian community in the village. It caused an enormous stir which makes very interesting reading.
