Europe / Re: SWEDEN:Surname LAKE
« on: Wednesday 16 January 19 11:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Ian,
Thanks for that. It gives me a start. I'll try to read up some more about these soldiers' names. On the face of it though, it looks as if there is probably no connection with the various English lines of LAKEs.

Europe / SWEDEN:Surname LAKE
« on: Saturday 12 January 19 10:33 GMT (UK)  »
I am part of a project researching the English surname LAKE. I am aware of quite a lot of LAKEs in Sweden in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. I wondered if a native Swedish person could tell me whether this name sounds foreign to a Swede (i.e. do you immediately think there must be English ancestry somewhere?), or is it also a native Swedish name? If the latter, what does the word mean and how do you pronounce it?

How to Use RootsChat (Please don't post requests here) / Indexing?
« on: Tuesday 23 August 16 15:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Over several years, I've had an enormous amount of help from Rootschat members and it's one of my favourite genealogy websites.
But how much more useful would it be if there were a surname index! There are so many messages now (both live and completed) that it's simply impractical to browse them all. But I'm sure there are some hidden gems of information that I'm missing.
I don't think an index could be created retrospectively because you would need a separate surname field, but would it be totally impossible to introduce the practice in the future?

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Baptism lookup request, Souldern, George LAKE
« on: Saturday 20 August 16 09:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Would someone be able to look up the baptism of George LAKE (or possibly LEAK/LEAKE) for me? It would be in Souldern, between 1800 and 1805. I've no idea who his parents were. I have his 2 marriage records (1823 and 1835), but neither of them names his father.
Many thanks in advance.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Sherborne baptism register lookup please
« on: Wednesday 11 July 12 09:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi Victor,

Thank you very much for looking that up. It's exactly what I hoped would be the case - now I can link him onto my tree.

Best wishes

Is anyone able and willing to do a lookup in the Sherborne baptism register, please?

I'm trying to identify an Anthony LAKE who appears only in the 1841 census (he died in 1848). He was living in Sherborne and stated to be born about 1801. So if someone could check between, say, 1795 and 1803 I would be very grateful.

Many thanks for looking that up, Linda - you're very kind. And, yes, that's just what I was hoping would be the case.

Best wishes

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / St Mary's Portsea: Marriage lookup
« on: Wednesday 18 April 12 16:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Is there anyone able and willing to look up a marriage for me in the St Mary's Portsea parish register? I have the IGI data, but I need to know whether there is any other information on the record, particularly regarding marital status of the bride and groom. The date is 4 Sep 1814 and the couple are Nicholas LAKE and Frances HITCHENS.
Help would be much appreciated.

Hi Stewart
Many many thanks for checking all that. What a helpful board this is! I hope I may be able to reciprocate at some point.

So it seems that there are several possibilities regarding George Lake: either his baptism didn’t get recorded (by oversight of the minister), or he was baptised at a Non-Conformist chapel perhaps, or he wasn’t baptised at all, or, despite the statements on the census returns and his seaman’s ticket, he wasn’t born on Jersey at all but he assumed that he had been because he grew up there.

Hmm, much food for thought and further research.

Thanks again to everyone who posted.
