Durham / Re: Deadfray Houses - Where are they located
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
Yes I'm reasonably sure about Deadfray Houses - that's what's given on the Durham Records Online Website for Robert Slater baptised 1697, buried 1753 - both events at Ryton  and the place of abode said to be Deadfray Houses. There are a number of other baptisms for Slaters also for Deadfray Houses
However after searching Google for Detfare and Delfare and reading the subsequent hits I'll accept that Deadfray is probably incorrect! It still doesn't help me to pinpoint where this place might have been on a map of Ryton. I had hoped that William Bourn might have mentioned Deadfray/Delfare/Detfare in his History of the Parish of Ryton but I haven't found anything yet!

Thanks for the suggestions and I'll keep looking

« on: Sunday 31 January 10 08:22 GMT (UK)  »
I've found my 6xGGrandfather Robert Slater born abt 1697 at Deadfray Houses and christened at Holy Cross Church Ryton. He married and continued to live at Deadfray Houses with his family until he died in 1753.

Can anybody please tell me where Deadfray Houses were located

Hello Mike,

Sorry can't help - I do have a family of Redpath's in my tree but not connected to Whickham - Robert Henry b abt 1860 in Gateshead married Dorothy Bertram Tynemouth area in 1883, they had 3 children Mary; Honoria & George Lived in Seaton Delavel (1891)  & Hartley (1901). My connection is through Dorothy who would have been my 3rd cousin 3times removed.

Hi Christopher

As far as I know they were Catholics - the marriage and christening data I have for Patrick & Martha and their two oldest children confirms that they were RC and the ceremonies took place in Ballymacnab

Thanks for the link - its an interesting web-site one that I've never come across before. I've added it to my favouites.

Armagh / Patrick Donnelly & Martha Maguire - Ballymacnab Armagh
« on: Sunday 21 September 08 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Patrick married Martha at Ballymacnab in 1856, they had 3 children also born and christened in Ballymacnab before they left Ireland for a new life on Tyneside. I have a reasonably well documented history of their life after 1860.  Patrick was born about 1829, Martha about 1838

Martha's mother Agnes, widow of James Maguire and Martha's brother John also came with them to Tyneside. Agnes was probably born about 1792 and she was the widow of James Maguire a linen weaver (information from her death certificate)

Can anybody please provide any details about Patrick and Martha prior to 1856 or any other information about this family?

Hi Gwen,

There is only one Church of England church in Whickham - its dedicated to St Mary the Virgin - usually known as St Mary's. I've got quite a nice picture of the church and I'll send it to you

Hi Janis,

I don't know whether Samuel was married previously - the Bishops Transcript for Whickham just gives the names Samuel Storey and Margery Jobling both of this parish for their marriage in  March 1734.

I've found a death  in the Whickham BTs for a Samuel Storey of Lobley Hill in June 1826 that gives his age as 80 so that would make his birth date about 1746.

By the way I see you are researching the name Greener - I'm descended from Anthony Greener 1736-1809 who married Elizabeth Pescod in 1765! What is your connection to the Greeners?

Enid

Thank for that - I think that Samuel is a bit too old to be mine - he married in 1774 and died some time after 1803,
