Also agreeing with Parmesan.

I know there doesn't seem to be much support for the idea that the censuses from 1921 onwards shouldn't be released, but if even a few people are so opposed to the idea, maybe they should be doing something more constructive than nit-picking on a forum. I've yet to hear of a counter-proposal giving grounds why the censuses shouldn't be released, and asking that the existing laws remain as they are. A few people should stand a chance if they present a well-worded, carefully thought out and above all accurate summary of the current laws, together with reasons why there should be no change.

After all, Guy's only one person, and look what he's achieved so far  ;D

Time for me to stop following this thread as well - the atmosphere's rubbing off on me  :-\

Why can't the microfiche copies be stored at Kew?

One trip to Kew would cost me hell of a lot more than the two wrong certificates I've purchased so far.

Yes Christine,

However, and maybe I'm a lucky one, my mother, brother and I used to have many 'family' discussions;  tales passed down, shared experiences, possible futures and working out theories of how and why things are.

Me and my mum have those discussions too Garth. The problem is, so much of what she's told me has been disproved in some way when I've checked it out  ;D She wasn't born until 1931, so I'm still operating on hearsay for the 20's and I'd like to confirm a few things.

When people bring up the question of people who are on the census not wanting it's release (in spite of Guy constantly pointing out that the 100 year closure doesn't exist), I always want to know what's going to happen if the census is kept closed for 100 years on privacy grounds, because of the misconception that confidentiality was promised. An increasing number of people live longer than 100 years now, so even if the census isn't made public until 2021, it's still going to contain information about living people. Effectively people are saying that it's wrong to release the 2021 census on a day when a person entered on it is 99 years and 364 days old, but if it's released the day after their one hundredth birthday, that's fine  ???

Personally, I'll sign in favour of early release. I paid for a household entry from the 1911 before it came online, hoping to solve a family mystery, and all it did was throw up two more. The 2021 can't be released early enough for me.

The Lighter Side / Re: Find my Past---was it a wise thing to do?

I thought that the offer made my FindMyPast during the World Cup was awful.
As a fully PAID UP member it was impossible to access any records during any England Matches.

How strange. When the third match was on, the only time I could fit 90 minutes in meant starting about 10 minutes before kick off. The site came to a standstill 2 or 3 times and was certainly slower than during the second free session, but at the end of 90 minutes I had downloaded 38 images from the 1911 census, which was far better than I expected.

Maybe the problem lies with your internet provider or computer, rather than with FindMyPast?

Couldn't swear to it, but I've an idea that I've seen that some societies didn't give permission for their records to be transferred from Family History Online to FindMyPast. I think it may have been because of the fact that it was going to cost more to view the records.

I'm very grateful to FindMyPast - it was an incredibly generous offer. If they do bring in a monthly sub, then at present I'd probably sign up for a month every six months or so. I can't do without Ancestry at present, as I'm still ploughing through all the London records, and I can't afford two annual subs. If FindMyPast expand parish records more (in the right counties of course  ;D ), I'd probably start begging for next year's Xmas present early.

I must admit that once I got used to some of the quirks of the 1911 search, I did like the site, and found it much quicker than Ancestry (apart from the hour I had to do when a match was on.) Hopefully FindMyPast will listen to people and bring in a monthly sub.

It's not FH as we all understand and practise it.  It's a different thing alltogether.  Best left alone, I'd reckon ::)
charlotte

'All understand and practise it" is a bit of a sweeping statement isn't it? Why should everyone have the same understanding of what family history is? One cousin of mine is only interested in researching descendants of his great-great grandparents, and finding as much out about each individual as possible. I'm not much interested in anyone born after WW2, so we have a totally different approach, and yours may be different again. It doesn't make any of us wrong. When did an instruction manual get issued for a hobby  ???

I'd love to - I was seriously impressed with the site. But I'm far enough back on my tree now that I'm not using censuses and BMD's much, and I spend what money I have for my hobby on the specific parish records that I need. I wouldn't have paid for the 1911 census as it was only to fill in background information, but I wasn't going to turn it down for free  ;D I'm hoping FindMyPast are going to listen to all the people clamouring for them to bring in a scheme to take out membership for a short period, as I would use that from time to time. But I can't justify paying for a long membership when I know I won't use the site that much.

I found that each search brought up information on how many credits it would cost and how to subscibe or top up.  I ignored that and clicked search/view etc and it continued on right through to the actual image.  So, yes, it does keep askinmg you to subscribe or pay to view but it stil goes through for free.

Once again I didn't get very much, but maybe I'm searching wrong.  However, on the 1911 census all my search enquiries comes back with 0 results, yet when the period was over the same queries brought up an index but needed payment to view.  I still can't understand this.  I've seen the above comments where many of you have got results during the free period.

Garth

I found a couple things with the searching Garth. Try to do your searches on the index before the next free period so you can type in exactly what you want, e.g. John Williams born 1896 living in Islington. I did find the site ran slow once or twice, and at those times it couldn't find matches, but it did when the site got faster again. I also found it nearly always returned no matches if I entered both a year of birth AND a place of birth, but it found the person I wanted if I only entered year or place. It also seems a bit funny on the place of birth field - it didn't find people if I said they were born in Burnham Market, but it did if I just put Burnham. Seems to be one of those 'less is best' search facilities. Hope that helps a bit.

Afraid it probably will. The wording is "Once you have signed in you will have 90 minutes to search and view our records for free - just choose the best time for you within the 24 hours." Signing in actually triggers your free session.
