Hello Joanne.
And welcome to this meeting of 'Caractacus' jockey ancestors.
Its been 2 years since I did any research on this, and your email triggered a last check on the internet to determine if James Parsons - who is both of our ancestors (and Brians, on here) is actually the Derby Winner of fame.
I have two pieces of evidence to support this theory now.
1)The Times newspaper lists the jockey as J.Parsons

2)This link - has the Jockey written down officially as James Parsons
http://www.epsomdowns.co.uk/pdf/roll_of_honour.pdf

3) Brians comment to me :  "As far as the James/John thing goes it is possible that, when he first joined the stables, there was already a James working there, so they called him John.  A similar thing happened to me when I first started work."  actually tallies with a fact I discovered from this link:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=TAN18870319.2.42&l=mi&e=-------10--1----0-all

It says that the owner of the horse: Snewing's chief jockey was named James Goater, who turned down the offer to ride Caractacus on the Day.
So perhaps our James was named John at work...

The other bits of evidence all seem to point at James Parsons as the Derby winner, I think it would be less likely he wasnt, after all of this evidence.

As for our connection - yes - i see that your trace back to James' parents exactly tallies with what I have on my family tree list. So unfortunately i cannot add to your knowledge or you to mine on that count,  but we are related at least :)
James Parsons younger brother William (brn 1850) is the father of of my Grandmother: Edith Parsons, whos Son was Ronald Gordon - my father.
I think that makes us 3rd Cousins Once removed !
Id love to get the details of James Parsons children to add to my family tree - i only really have our own line which came down from his brother William.

Hello Brian, and Valda too.
Thanks for your input and enquiries. And apologies for my slow responses.
I have tried to match up all the data you supplied to little avail unfortunately.
It does seem likely that your great grandfather is my ancestor James,
from Dorset, born 1846, looking at the census, if the age tally is to be relied upon. The James/John name discrepancy however is still a great concern to me and some how have to find a way to verify the links with better referances, im sure you agree.
Its a pity that you have no records in your family (bibles, other relatives?) who could provide you with tangible evidence of the winning race, in whatever shape or form that might be (cups, certificates, letters, photos)
SO that, ultimately we can only try to see if we connect as a family.

Thank you for substantiating the owner.
Now I need to locate information on the 'John Parsons' who rode Caractacus to victory and see if it really was my great uncle...

much obliged for your assistance!

James Parsons (b. 1846 Cranbourne, Dorset) brother of William (1850).
James was a groom at the racing stables of William Day in Woodyates, Dorset, a famous trainer of his era.

James rode the Derby winner Caractacus in 1862 and remains the youngest jockey to ride a Derby winner (16 years old).

He moved to Tyttenhanger, St. Albans when Caractacus became a stallion at stud there, and lived in St. Pancras in 1891 and 1901. I had thought my own great grandfather Parsons was the successful Derby winning jockey of 1862 but research has unfortunately proved it was the above James!

HOWEVER - this story is unsubstantiated because Internet shows JOHN Parsons rode the winning horse, not James - no John Parsons in the family then.

CAN ANYONE SHED LIGHT ON THIS PUZZLE - anyone know this man?

Hello Sue and Pete.

First of all - a tremendous thank you for the links and information in this thread!
William Wilson: Born: 08 Dec 1818  Bardon Hill, Leics    is my Great Great Grandfather!
His Daughter Ellen Gilbert had a daughter Edith, whose son Ronald is my father!
My brother and I have been tracing our routes for some time and your info has made the wilson connection a rich vein and taken us back a longer way than other links.
We have, through various family bibles and other sources, scratched together a lot of data and perhaps can offer more detail to you within the tree with which i am connected.
I noticed a missing sibling in the william wilson's list for example - we also have a William T Wilson born 1873
And also - in the siblings for his father Thomas Wilson, we have a first born William Wilson who was born in 1802 (died : 26 Mar 1814)
I would love to share any more data you might have that can enable us to go back further in time from Thomas Wilson in particular.

Stuart.
