Many thanks to all those who responded.  There are obviously several avenues to explore.  I will post another response if I have any success to report.

Technical Help / Poor quality recording
« on: Monday 05 May 08 10:23 BST (UK)  »
I have a cassette tape on which I recorded a family history interview with my late father.  However, the quality of the recording is very poor, making it impossible to pick out much of what he says.  Does anyone know if there is some way of getting the sound enhanced.

Thanks for the responses so far.  You've provided several avenues to chase up.

There appears to be no marriage recorded in the IGI of a Sarah KIMBERLEY in Worcestershire between 1815 and 1835.  Though I appreciate this doesn't prove anything.  My Sarah was definitely listed as UNmarried in both 1841 and 1851.  I haven't managed to check out possible siblings yet.  I do know her daughter Catherine and her granddaughter Jane also went on to be unmarrried mothers.  A family tradition?

It's possible that there was a will, but unlikely as the the family appear to have been dirt poor Nailers.  I haven't found any likely siblings in the censuses, either living with or nearby.  I think, as I haven't found the second Sarah in the censuses, she may have died in infancy or she might have married.  I suppose either of these might help to find the other father's name .  I think I'll have to get back to the PRs.

Family History Beginners Board / Separating two Sarahs

From the 1841 and 1851 censuses, it appears that Sarah KIMBERLEY was unmarried and living with her three daughters. From her stated ages I estimate  that she must have been born in Bromsgrove about 1802.  On searching the IGI I find that there were four Sarah KIMBERLEYs born in Bromsgrove between 1775 and 1815, i.e. in one in 1778, one in 1794 and two in1802.  The last two were christened on the same day in the same church, but have different parents.  I have confirmed these by looking at the parish register copies held at Worcester History Centre.

My question is, do I have any hope of identifying which of these Sarahs is my wife's ancestor?  It seems that there will be no record of a marriage which might have provided her father's name.  Does anyone have any suggestions please.

I entirely agree.  I meant to imply they were disfunctional for their era.  Hence the inverted commas!  In fact, the evidence suggests that the working classes in Victorian times did not have the "high moral values", (for that read hypocrasy) of many of their middle class counterparts.

Thanks for your previous help on this topic.

Best wishes for the New Year

On looking at the painting again, it shows a much older woman.  So if it is by Harry, it's more likely Jane's mother (or possibly his own mother) as he died when Jane was only 47.

I'm not sure if all the sons of Harry and Jane retained the Kimberley name.  Ernest certainly did, but the family have lost touch with the families of Edward and Harry junior.

Hi  Valda

Thanks for a brilliant bit of sleuthing.  All the facts clearly fit together.  I had already identified Katherine KIMBERLEY in the 1871 census as the likely mother of Jane.  It appears that Jane came from a "dysfunctional" family as both her mother, Katherine and her older sister, Elizabeth seem to have been unmarried mothers!

Interestingly my wife has an unidentified oil painting of a Victorian female relative.  It now seems highly likely that this is a painting of Jane by Harry.

What a web of deceit they wove.  Your assistance has been quite invaluable

Thanks Susan

It's always helpful to be able to definitely eliminate someone.  However, I have gathered more evidence that he may have actually changed his name to KIMBERLEY when he married/started to live with his wife Jane.  The birth cert of the Harry KIMBERLEY (born 1887) who I believe to be their eldest son shows the mother to be Jane KIMBERLEY, domestic servant, and no father's name given.

Does anyone know of a precedent for such a change of name?  Perhaps he wanted to hide his true identity.

Hi Toni

Thanks for your note.  Yes I have checked the IGI, and once again there are possibles, but nothing definite to tie them to my Harry.  I've also tried FreeBMD for a death cert. for Harry, as he must have died between 1901 and 1916, but again there's no sign of him.  I'm beginning to wonder if he used a pseudonym, or perhaps completely changed his surname.  It certainly happened with another of my ancestors around the same time.
